š±Myth: Rocks/leca at the bottom = enough drainage
Placing LECA or rocks at the bottom of a pot without drainage might feel like a good solutionāit seems logical that theyād help water escape. But this widely held belief is sadly not entirely true, and following it can do more harm than good.
š§What Really Happens
In a container without drainage holes, excess water has nowhere to go. It pools in the bottom layers, saturating the soil and creating oxygen-poor conditions that stress roots and promote rot. Whether or not you add gravel, if water canāt exit the pot, it might eventually accumulate and/or clog the air pockets in the soil.
š§ŖThe (Contested) Science: The Perched Water Table
A concept often used to explain poor drainage is the perched water table. According to this idea, when water moves through soil, gravity pulls it down, while capillary action holds it up. At a certain point, these forces balance, creating a saturated zoneātypically just above a finer-to-coarser material transition (like soil sitting atop rocks).
This model suggests that adding gravel or LECA simply shifts this saturated zone higher in the pot, closer to the rootsānot lower where youād want it. Thatās why many gardeners and horticulturists advise against it.
However, some researchers argue that the perched water table conceptāwhile helpful as a simplificationāisnāt always accurate in small container environments or when using modern potting mixes. Soil particle size, moisture tension, and structure interact in more complex ways than the model assumes.
ā Whatās Not a Myth: Drainage Holes and Good Soil Matter
Regardless of the theoretical model, one truth remains: water needs somewhere to go. The most effective way to improve drainage is:
⢠Always use pots with drainage holesāthey allow gravity to remove excess water.
⢠Use a well-structured potting mix with good porosity. Amend with perlite, vermiculite, or bark to improve aeration and drainage.
⢠Avoid overly dense, moisture-retentive soil unless youāre planting something that specifically needs it (like some ferns or bog plants).
Test your mix by watering and observing. If it drains slowly or pools on top, it needs more amendment. And make sure drainage holes are clear and not blocked.
šŖØWhen Rocks Can Be Useful
While adding rocks instead of drainage holes isnāt ideal, there are still good reasons to use them:
⢠To reduce soil volume in very large pots (where deep soil layers arenāt needed for shallow-rooted plants).
⢠To add weight to prevent top-heavy pots from tipping.
⢠To cover large drainage holes, using mesh or broken potteryāthis prevents soil loss without significantly blocking water flow.

Scindapsus Peasun. Really interesting to see how the leaf shape starts to change as it climbs. One of the vines started pushing out stunted / funky looking leaves. I should have cut it after the second one but I wanted to see how it grew out. You know, for āscienceā or whatever š Definitely going to chop and prop this one.

I bought the planter on the left off of Amazon not realizing how big it was. Could I technically put this pencil cactus in there and let it grow into the pot size? Itās been in the same pot and soil for 5 years, and Iāve given it multiple āhaircutsā if you will haha
Edit: it comes with a 4ā riser that I planned on using since it is such a large jump

For those with plants in self watering pots, what is your fertilizer schedule?
Add fert every 2nd/3rd time you fill the reservoir?
Always have a diluted fert in the water?
Top water with fert and empty the reservoir once itās drained through?

New Plant Dad
I have a quick question I live in New Orleans and it gets pretty hot in the afternoon time. I have two beautiful Boston ferns that sit in the front of the house and it does get some direct sunlight. Do you all think that I should move them back to a shadier area or can they stay where they are?

Faith :)
Hey everyone! I just purchased two new plants a few days ago. And this morning I noticed the lighter green guy had a bug flying around him. Both of the new plants have these weird dots/holes and now Iām worried that theyāre infested with something and that itāll spread to my other two healthy plants.
Iām still very new to plant care, but decided after having my other two for over a year that it was time for more. However, Iām starting to worry that this was a bad choice haha
If anyone has any thoughts on what I should do itād be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much :)
