Was wondering if anyone has found a reasonable solution for using a humidifier in a very hard water region. I live in the desert southwest so a humidifier is essential for my plants. Using hard water in my humidifier clearly is bad all around. Obviously bad for the machine but it seems to put out a talcum like mist. There’s a film of baby powderish dust on everything that never existed before. Here’s the issue: -It takes about a gallon every 24 hours. Therefore, using distilled water doesn’t seem financially sustainable for me. -Boiling water, or letting it sit out doesn’t do anything but slightly reduce the magnesium/calcium levels. -Tap water conditioner doesn’t seem to work either. -I can’t afford a reverse osmosis filter. -last time it rained was 200 days ago. -home distilled water seems insane. Like several hours to produce 1 gallon. So just curious if others were in a similar predicament. Also, is it dangerous to breathe in hard water mist?

What happened to my plant? It might be from over watering - my toddler had a go at it with water a month ago. I haven’t watered it since. My plant, Annie Anx, used to be so healthy and then winter hit. The leaves closest to the window has decayed, but the plant next to her is doing just fine. Does anyone have any tips for how I can get her healthy again?
This is a correction post. Previously and I can't remember when someone asked about a bug and did it bother their plant. I believe it was a millipede. I'm going to blame my mistake on poor math skills! I did not count the legs right. Millipedes eat decaying matter and centipedes eat other bugs. Neither are a problem for your plant.
My calathea is looking very sad…splotchy discoloration on many leafs, and some leaves are browning/drying up around the edges. I also just found these white flecks all over the back of the leaves. Pest? Context: It sits in a terracotta pot on a south facing window sill, and I water per the app’s suggested schedule.
I purchased a ginseng ficus a few weeks ago. Right after leaving the store I realized that it had a mushy base which was very concerning. The roots looked ok, but I was still worried. There were lots of flies around it and on the soil (I don’t really have that with other plants so I’m not really sure if that’s normal or not). Well it’s in its spot now and the leaves keep yellowing and then dropping (a lot!). I have it on my dresser with a strong artificial light and I’ve been misting it, but would it like more to be outside since it’s a bonsai? I’m new to this species so I need all the help I can get. Is there any saving this baby? Purchased last week, rinsed and sprayed with insecticide soap, repotted with homemade mix (1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid bark, 1/3 tropical houseplant mix with lava rock) watered deeply, allowed to drain well, named it, loved on it and placed it in a well lit room. I left town for 3 days and came home to this 😭 Any recommendations?
