It’s been a big week at the Pi house. Another one is opening up!
Oncidium Twinkle 'Pink Profusion'
I got this one as a seedling last year so wasn’t expecting any blooms. I mean it’s in a super tiny 1” square pot. But I come home to find lovely little blooms starting to open.
The flowers are around 1/4” and are suppose to be fragrant, ranging from chocolate to honey. I think this one is a honey but I can’t smell anything (I betting it’s a morning fragrant flower or allergies). Mature plants can bloom multiple times a year, putting on a mass of flowers.
The flowers remind me of pink versions of the Oncidium ‘Gold Dust’

Ionocidium cv. Popcorn 'Highlands'
An intergeneric oncidinea I picked up last year. It’s pretty small. This is the second time it’s bloomed for me. The blooms this time are around 1/2” and look like they will be more numerous this time.
The lip starts as a lovely lemon yellow that fades pretty quickly to a very soft pink. Last time the blooms lasted around a month. No scent but who cares! It goes from yellow to pink!
Yay!

For those of you using the temperature drop trick to help instigate flower spikes on your phalaenopsis orchids… how long do you wait? When do you give up and just assume it’s not going to happen for some of your plants this year? Getting frustrated waiting on a few, and I’m wondering if I should just throw in the towel this season on some of these jerks. Harrumph.

Help!! I have two orchids that have fallen victim to mealy bugs!! I can’t seem to kick them. I have been spraying the leaves with a diluted peroxide mixture, which seems to work, but then after a few weeks they sneak back out.
Any suggestions on how to kill these pests.

I had a fallen yellow leaf on my Den. kingianum ‘silcocki’ so I pulled the plant out to have a closer look. I have a couple of growths from the bottom that I took to be new canes and then I started seeing growth coming from further up on canes that look like new canes?? And then I see a couple that have roots growing out some others??? Are these some kind of baby. No wonder it dropped a leaf! The new cane I observed last prog report has grown to nice small cane, can anyone tell me what these others are?

CAN SOMEONE HELP?! When I got this guy he had these wrinkled, leathery, dark leaves and hardly any roots. Since I’ve been caring for him (I repotted in a smaller pot due to the no roots) he’s grown more roots and two new leaves, but they have remained folded?! Also moved into more light for the dark leaf colour but now there’s maybe some yellowing and this dimpled appearance just happened practically overnight! What do I do???

Finally, they have begun to pop. This is one of the first flowers to open on an oncidium sphacelatum, native to Mexico and Central America. Sometime called a dancing lady orchid. A lovely orchid with long sprays of lots of small lemon yellow and rust blooms. No scent but dazzling to the eye. Blooms open in quick succession and last about a month. I’ll post another photo once they’ve all opened.
I think the oncidium alliance is my favorite group. Lots of variation in the flower form and color, and the plant is interesting looking when not in bloom. Back in my college days, this was the first type of orchid I branched into after I successfully got my phalanopsis to bloom (phals are great confidence boosters 😁). I found this one in a box store. I have to admit I prefer hybrids to species, simply because they are more forgiving.
Doesn’t look like I will have as many blooms this year but no bother. One flower is as beautiful as a hundred.
Hooray for oncidiums! 👯♀️👯♀️👯♀️

Can any of y’all tell me what that new branch is on my orchid? (First photo) It appeared a few days ago, but didn’t pay much attention to it!😅 She’s a miniature moth orchid. And I got her a little over four months ago. I don’t know if she is healthy or not if you could tell me anything that you think might be wrong I would love that! Thank you! 😊

Hey guys! I have a couple questions for y’all, so my mom has a orchid that has no flower for almost a year. I’m hoping she will get a spike as it gets cold. Oh and is it true that you shouldn’t repot while they are flowering? ( photo is for attention )

How often do orchids bloom? I bought two when they were in bloom and pruned back the stems after they wilted. I’ve read multiple sources that say if you do this, they’ll bloom six weeks later again. So far, no joy. Is this a fairy tale? 🤔

I just got my first orchid.. it came in this ceramic planter not very big and no drainage holes, there is also this root coming out of the pot. Should I replant it now?

Hi! Can anyone tell me an orchid-safe way to lower the pH of their soil (bark-based)? I’ve discovered that it’s currently too alkaline!
