Hi everyone! Thank you to those that commented on my post yesterday - you guys were super helpful! Today I decided to take a look at my orchid’s roots, and I noticed a slight smell, and a lot of black spots (both on the roots and on the middle base) and paper-thin roots. I also noticed some marks on the flower stem. I’m thinking that I’m looking at root rot, but I’m not completely sure what I should do. Thank you!

Hello! I’ve been caring for a beautiful Phalaenopsis orchid for about 4-5 months, have seen its blooms fall, and now re-bloom. I’ve cut off one stem after it began to shrivel, repotted it in new media (a mix of bark, moss, and those reddish-brown balls), and water it with a fertilizer soak weekly. Before repotting, I did cut a few roots off, that seemed to be paper-thin, with some black spots. It stays perched to the side of an east-facing window. I’m now noticing some white spots beginning in the crown of the orchid, and the new leaf that’s growing seems kind of smaller than the rest of the plants, with some dark spots. A couple of the leaves have a dark ring on their undersides. Does anyone know what this is and how I should do to help my orchid?

i was gifted this orchid as a get well soon gift after I had surgery. I love it, it is beautiful, and I want to take good care of it. I just watered it, I’m letting it drain, and i’m about to take a shower and let it have a bit of humidity. Any tips or tricks for a first time orchid mother?

This guy has had a very rough year due to a persistent, (but I believe finally eradicated) case of mealy bugs. Didn’t want to get my hopes up, but what I thought could still be a root is looking like it’s definitely a flower spike. Hooray for the resiliency of orchids!

What is your experience with fragrant orchids? Any you recommend? Currently my Oncidium Twinkle 'Pink Profusion' is going thru a very interesting scent evolution. It started as honey cocoa. A week later it was full on hot chocolate. Now it’s smells like a funeral parlor, kinda a soft lily scent that triggers long forgotten childhood memories. Really interesting progression. I’m going on a business trip next week so I may have to ask Mr Pi to stick his nose in to see what changes occur. Others in my collection are less dynamic but luckily still lovely, mostly chocolate and soft floral scents. I’d like to expand the olfactory range of my collection so always looking for new plants. Hoarder much? I haven’t dipped my toe into the cesspit of bulbophyllum
yet. Pretty sure Mr Pi will have plenty to say when one shows up in bloom 😈

My orchid was overwatered and had root rot, so I recently repotted it. I had to cut off quite a bit of roots, and repotted it in an orchid bark mix. Now, my leaves are leathery and drooping and the stem and flowers are also drooping. Any idea what’s wrong?

The madness of the Ianclarkara rescue. I rescued this plant through a service that sends out struggling plants destined for the trash, knowing it was an orchid but not having any idea what I was getting myself into. I thought it would be a phaelenopsis with a fungus, something I have pretty good success treating. Well this has been an entirely different beast that’s for sure. It’s had a lot of history I have no idea about and has certainly had a pseudo bulb removed right in the middle of what’s left which leaves a strange gap. Alright so what I did when I freed it from its tiny cup it was escaping was I cut off all the dead roots and placed it in spagnum with a leca bottom in a plastic orchid pot, then aggressively treated (and still treating) with a gentle fungicide weekly. About a month or so of this and it has rewarded me with new growth! I’m so proud. This is Ianclarkara Cheyenne Marie “Green Gecko” first pics are how it arrived, and the roots before, last pics are how it is now. The bulb damage hasn’t really changed and it has lost two leaves due to practically being black with fungus spots. Sorry for the massive post, maybe we can all learn from the odyssey of saving this super sick orchid.

First Orchid I’ve actually gotten to send out stalk. So excited. However, I am concerned about black rot? at base. Roots mostly bright green (cut of rotted before transplanting). I left dirt around roots as I was “afraid” to remove. Can you help?

I am trying to get a couple of stubborn orchids to spike. I want to order a couple of grow lights. Does anyone have any suggestions of grow lights or things I can do to encourage the spiking?

Hi everybody! It would be great if you could help me with saving my beloved Orchid. The stem started to dry out and after I cleaned the roots and cut all the sick parts, nothing grew back and recently its leaves started to fall off. What do you think I can do to save it? What is possibly wrong? Thanks for your help!

Oncidium Twinkle 'Pink Profusion' Most of the blooms have opened. Its scent has gotten more chocolate and less honey as they blooms age. For a seedling, it put on a nice and unexpected show. Happy Friday!

Reminder that Trader Joe’s has access to some nice exotic orchids. Mine local one only had phals, but I talked to someone who said they would ask their purchaser about different varieties. A few days later they had these bad boys for $18 apiece. So FRAGRANT too, the zygopetalum is so sweet and the oncidium smells like chocolate
