Hello fellow plant lovers! I’m looking into building a terrarium (or something similar) with life (insects, fish, invertebrates, etc) to provide additional enrichment for my 2 cats. I know this may sound silly, but I recently moved to a much smaller place with no outdoor area and they are not thrilled. I want to give them any and every opportunity to be even mildly entertained and this is one of the ideas I keep coming back to. Since it would involve life, I want to make sure I get it right.
- Are there any resources (educational or otherwise) that helped you when developing your terrariums?
- Is there a particular terrarium, set up, or inhabitant you would suggest?
- Any other advice, suggestions, or things to watch out for?
I definitely need something that can close so the cats can’t get into it and to keep the inhabitants safe. I would like something in a 10gal container or smaller. My one cat has poor eye sight so I would like the inhabitants to be more active and visible than perhaps a praying mantis.

First time terrarium owner and loving them so far! I bought these last week and can’t stop looking at them. I have a cat so I also love plants that he can’t easily get to. I can have these on my desk and not have to worry about him! Going to a build-your-own terrarium class here in Nashville later this month and excited to make my own.

my terrarium is doing pretty well, i have some white dots (fungi?) but i hope with time they’ll eat up all the nutrients keeping them alive and eventually die off, the springtails have boomed in population and the isopods and millipedes have been chilling, this terrarium has been going since november but it wasn’t as full, only boasting two plants, a neon pothos and a persian shield plant. the persian shield plant lost a good amount of its foliage while the pothos put out two new leaves since then, the rest of the plants i added around january, including a fern, aspergus fern, some kind of peperomia, a trailing watermelon begonia cutting and a cutting of a creeping oak leaf ficus. i am pretty happy on how this ecosystem experiment is going and i can’t wait for what the future holds within this terrarium.

I made a teranium with stones at the bottom a good layer of soil and further stones on top and after using a succulent feed all of the plants died!!
Can anyone suggest any unkillable plants for a medium/large bottle teranium please? Also the teranium isn’t near a window but is in a bright room. Thanks

Do I need to be worried about this fungus growing in my crested gecko terrarium? It’s growing under his water bowl, but is it something that could possibly be toxic?
I’m hoping it just looks scarier than it is.
