Help! My grow light fell and tried to decapitate my pitcher plant. What can I do about the casualties? Can I propagate the loose pitcher in distilled water? Also I just got the Venus fly trap and nepenthes, any advice as to what I should do to assist it. Is it in the right substrate, they were bought at a plant nursery so I’m not sure. Also can you over water your carnivores by putting too much water in the tray to bottom water? Do I need to mist the nepenthes so water makes its way in the pitcher? Any advice is welcome for a new carnivorous plant parent. Also going dormant, more on that plz. Thx so much 🌱🪴🦟

    dormancy can be as complicated or as easy as you want it to be. carnivorous plants are NOT made for frost, so if your area gets snow, don't leave them outside. the fridge method seems most successful. wipe the roots clean of substrate, place in damp sphagnum moss in a bag in the fridge and leave it there until the last frost in your area is done. those substrates do all look to be correct, if you ever get to repotting just remember that carnivorous plants can't have normal potting soil, non-soil mediums like sphagnum or peat with some perlite only. you absolutely can still overwater carnivorous plants but it's pretty difficult, just let the trays sit empty for a day or two before refilling so it can dry for a moment and let the roots breathe. it's not recommended to put water inside of a nepenthes' pitchers unless the pitchers are bone dry.

      Thank you, any advice on the black leaves on the VFT and the dark brown towards the base of the stem

      What about the pitcher that got cut off? Can I do anything with it?

      looks to be normal coloration towards the middle. vft traps will only open a few times before the plant kills that trap, it's normal. trim the dead leaf off all the way down to the rhizome

      i don't think so, sorry :-( pitchers are self heading so they need a bit of stem on the cutting in order to root and grow another plant
