Hello! I just got my first carnivorous plants. When I first brought them home about two weeks ago, I did some reading and was under the impression they needed to be kept quite moist at all times and had read to keep the bottom in water, so I had them sit in a shallow tray of distilled water for the first day or so. However, I think I overdid it and the leaves started turning yellow after a few days, I assume from overwatering. I haven’t watered them in several days now, do you think they will make a comeback? Is there anything I can do to help them? The pots they are in are tiny, but they do have drainage holes at the bottom. Any tips appreciated for a first time carnivorous plant owner :)

I kept as much of the original soil it came in as I could but put potting mix at the bottom to fill the pot.

It is my understanding that butterwort (Pinguicula) plants require soil that is pretty much nutrient devoid. Potting soil and fertilizer can easily kill them. Fertilizing should come from the bugs they catch on their leaves or careful application of specific fertilizer spray on the leaves, typically fertilizing should never take place in the soil.

Thank you that is good to know! What soil do you use?

I make my own. I use pretty much equal parts sand, peat moss without fertilizer, pumice, and perlite. I also have some growing in long fiber sphagnum moss, but I can tell they like the rockier substrate.

I will also add that it took some time for my carnivorous plants to acclimate to my home, there was some dieback to the plants, but afterwards they rebounded and are doing great. Here is a picture of some of my Pinguicula. I love them. ❤️

They are beautiful. Are they in a terrarium?

They are, after I water I make sure I leave the terrarium open so any water that got on the leaves dries out (I try to avoid spraying the leaves directly). Those are in a Zilla Micro Habitat Arboreal, 8". I wanted a terrarium that had some height so the flowers growing tall wouldn’t run out of space and I really like that it’s front opening and has air vents. This terrarium was put together in probably July 2023. I get lots of flowers so I think I’m doing something right, but a lot of the time it’s learning from mistakes and trying to improve from it.

Pings don’t really need to sit in water especially in the winter- when they are dormant which it looks like yours are in that form it’s good to let them dry out a bit. Keep them more wet in the summer- keep them in as much light as possible no matter the season! And yes definitely no fertilizer. They do well in a very sandy mix.
