I’m thinking of getting a Venus flytrap as my entrance to the carnivorous side of plants. Is there anything I should know before hand? I know they’re sensitive to unfiltered water and need tons of humidity and light. Anything helps!

MelMHO- I'd start with Nepenthes as an intro to carnivorous. Similar care, distilled or rain water, lighting, humidity...no dormancy... a little less complicated from what I've gathered. And they are super cool plants!

Website. I got my nepenthes from them. I'm clear across the country in VT...they arrived GORGEOUS!!! They've answer all my emails, questions...have newsletters, care info. Couldn't have asked foe better service

RyanI know the other person recommended a nepenthes, but sundews are another great starter option! Cape sundews and many others are extremely hardy and also beautiful. I personally started off with sundews so I’m biased.

How large do they get?

It depends off of species but they don’t get too big. This is the one that started me with carnivorous plants and I’ve had it for a couple years.

Yeah planta says up to like, 10 feet (the plant not the pitcher) but I don’t know how realistic that is.

Nepenthes can do that for sure, you just need a big greenhouse which is… not accessible to most people to say the least…

Yeah, I wonder how expensive it would cost to build one. Assuming you had the funding (which I know I don’t) it would be a fun project.

I remembered a guy on instagram I follow @bakedout333 built his own little greenhouse for cheap and he grows a lot of nepenthes in there. I kinda forgot about him when I commented tbh but it doesn’t seem like it’s too hard to do.

I bought a package of 3 different. Alata, Rebecca Soper, and Gaya. The Alata seems to grow faster and larger.

Yeah, I live in an area with lots of mosquitoes so I wonder if it would help keep the ones that make it inside at bay?
