AlyssaSpider mites! Wash off the plant in the shower, then spray with a neem oil/water concoction. Also check any other plants itās near for the same thing

Is this common? How bad are spider mites to a plant?

Yeah they are fairly common, especially on herbs and flower plants, some even get them on their tropical leafy plants they grow indoors. They are pretty bad, nothing to really leave alone, if theyāre allowed to get out of control they can eat through leaves and cause them to yellow and die and in worse cases itāll cause the whole plant to go into shock and die. Definitely something to keep on top of as much as possible, but if youāre just growing to eat the basil in the short term and not let it grow over winter, Iād suggest harvesting all of it now, give it a really thorough wash and start fresh with new plants or seeds before the season is over
