I would really appreciate some help with my spider plant who was recently given to me by someone very special. My spider plant is named Herbie and matters a lot to me. I would be really grateful for help with a few things! I am very much a beginner! 1. I’m not sure whether Herbie is one or two or even three plants? It looks like there are multiple in the same pot but I’m not sure? 2. Is this enough room for Herbie? There are some roots coming out of the bottom of the pot so I’m worried the pot is too small and I need to repot? 3. I’m worried about light as apparently they need some sunlight but at the moment Herbie is receiving only shade because my bedroom is on the north facing side of the house. I only have one windowsill facing north and no other option of location. Is that ok? 4. I’m worried about over watering. How do I know when I need to water and when not? Any help would be massively appreciated!!! I really care about Herbie and want to do my best! đŸȘŽ

Spider plants are very resilient! I'm no expert but it's a pretty plant!

I suggest getting a clip on grow light. Sansi makes ones you can clip onto the pot rim & set to go on and off the same time each day for like 3-6 or 12 hours of light. I use them on all plants that aren't in my South facing window.

Usually when roots start coming out of the bottom like that is a sign the plant has outgrown the pot. I would suggest repotting it in a pot no bigger than 2 inches from what it’s in now

Looks like 2 plants to me, keep them together if you’d like. These prefer snug pots but it looks like it needs a repot. Indirect bright light works!

Also they’re very kind plants. Water when leaves are a little droopy or soil is dry 2 inches dry, because they tend to like to dry out.

Looks like it needs a bigger pot. You might not know until you dig in if it’s 1 or you can separate. I was gifted one too and it lived at my office which really no real sunlight, only artificial light. It did fine!

Ooh! What a lovely Herbie is! Could definitely use a new pot, if you want to keep all the plants together. Or you could divide. Looks like it could be two, even three plants in there. Spiders like a snug put, but it’s definitely craving a little more space. I generally water mine when the leaves get a little pale/not as vibrant green, and the leaves relax a little, like they’re not stuck up as perky, or they “fold” instead of just curving, like they’re weight of the leaf is too much for it and the ends kind of drop. I have at least two spiders in my north windows and they’re doing great! If they’ve got a wide view of the sky—and honestly, based the first photo that looks to be the case—they should be good!

Keep all the plants together. They provide a lush full look. Diving will damage the roots. Spider plant roots are thick and densely packed. Repotting as already suggested will help. Ensure the soil has lots of perlite for good drainage. The concern could be overwatering. The base of the plants looks dark like it’s getting too much water or it is sitting in drainage water below the pot. I recommend watering only when the soil dries and the plant is slightly limp. Remove all excess water from the outer pot. Add fertilizer each month. The leaves will darken. The plant needs more light than a north window can provide. It could live. But, the growth rate will significantly decrease. Add a grow light within 1 foot of the plant running at least 12 hours a day. đŸȘŽđŸ€
