My mom always says there’s a difference between plant food and fertilizer… is that true? If so, what should I use?

hmm im not extensively educated on the difference but from my understanding fertilizer is going to specify the npk ratio (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) which will enrich the soil and help with plant health. and i think a lot of products labeled as plant food are really just fertilizers. fertilizers help the plant make its own food. so “plant food,” as in soil additives, is not necessary. i use Easy Peasy Liquid All Purpose Indoor Plant Food from amazon which is ultimately a fertilizer. this is probably more in the realm of what your looking for. lmk if u have questions

according to miracle gro's website, plant food and fertilizer are terms that can be used in exchange with eachother when talking about adding nutrients to your soil to help your plant grow. fertilizer is the "technical or horticulturally correct term" (Plant Food vs Plant Fertilizer: Unearthing the Differences), but either can be used! plant food can also refer to the food, or glucose, that plants produce during photosynthesis. so your mom would be right and wrong; it depends on which plant food she is talking about! hope this helps!
