I’ve just recently gotten into tropicals and my calatheas are my favorites! This one and the rattlesnake truly point their leaves up at night and I love it. I’ve only had mine a short time, but I mist every 3rd day.
1 gillaOmg I’m so happy for you! I have one and I adore it. I’ve noticed that it’s not as fussy as my other calatheas which I really appreciate 😂 As for some advice, make sure to put her in some well draining potting soil (Fox Farm Happy Frog Potting Soil mixed with Perlite and Orchid Bark has worked wonders for me!). It seems like you have the humidity aspect of it under control which is great! Calatheas don’t like drying out completely, so once the first 1-2 inches of the soil are dry, then water! I use a tropical plant fertilizer for mine (you can follow Planta’s reminders on fertilization of course). And I’m not sure if you know so I thought I should include this, but your prayer plant is a Peacock Calathea! Hope this all helps!
1 gillathank you much!!! I’m new to plants so i definitely need the advice. didn’t know about fertilizers or anything haha thank you
1 gillaNo problem! Just make sure to always dilute fertilizer with water… it’s best to under fertilize than over-fertilize! Over-fertilizing won’t make your plant grow faster or better, it’ll kill the plant. I’ve made that mistake when I was first starting (luckily I managed to save the plant by repotting it). Calatheas are pretty difficult plants to start with as a beginner, but I started with them too lol, so as long as you pay her close attention she’ll do great! Hope this helps! 😊
2 gillningarThank you . All your comments have also helped me to find a solution to my above posted plant. Hoping to save it by replanting and moss cover.
3 gillningarActually if you have a calathea it is not a true prayer plant, but many call it that. A prayer plant is a maranta. Both are from the same family with a similar name. A few care differences but the most obvious difference is the way they grow. Calatheas are more upright while marantas spread out and look good in hanging pots. Both enjoy high humidity and many people say not to use tap water because of the added chemicals, not chlorine or chlorimine (sp), but fluoride. I’m not sure because I use RO water on all my plants. Calatheas have more variety of colors also. They are beautiful plants and wish you luck. They are difficult and can be a challenge.
