Eeeek. Daughter got me an Alocasia Stingray as my FIRST Alocasia. She just liked the way it looked. Now I am worried I will kill it! Should I go semi-hydro??? What do I need to know?

I was so excited to get mine. It died!! Idk if it was spider mites or what. I have over 385 plants that are thriving but that plant DIED in a matter of days. I was so sad!!!

Oh no!!!!!! I plan to spray mine down tomorrow. I had a few thicker leaf species on my list but she said she couldn't find those. I will do the best I can, but I will feel terrible if it dies.

Awww that’s sweet of her! I had one too and it died :( I didn’t water it enough and found it all dried up and crunchy!:( I use spangnum moss on the top layer of all my alocacia plants- helps it keep moist. Keep it in an area you can watch it closely, it’s a beautiful plant though :)

I just saw a really large healthy one at Lowe’s just a couple of days ago. I left it there even though I really wanted it, Planta said it was not recommended for me. I had it on my wishlist but removed it. I’ve killed a few Polly Alocasia so I believe the app. I’m sending super good vibes to you. You got this. 😊 I

Depends, are you used to semi hydro? Because there is the feeding, the flushing, the transition. So while the watering is more hands off, they require more care than soil. What you need to know is that the plant must be healthy before doing such transition as it is rebuilding a root system. Soil and semi hydro roots are different and an already declining Alocasia may not be able to make it through that change. The key with Alocasias is good light and consistency in the watering. While not soaking wet, they do not like fully drying out. Alocasias are personally my preferred genus (I must be close to 100 with a few dozens of different ones)

I have never done semi hydro, but everyone has a first! I just don't want this to die. My daughter will feel so bad and I will feel worse!

You are absolutely right! Then I would recommend researching fertilizer (needs to be synthetic for semi hydro) and your preferred substrate. You should also make sure that the fertilizer is complete, as otherwise you will need additional products. As you can’t have regular potting soil in a self watering, the soil retains too much water. (I mean technically anything is possible but this is not recommended, especially for getting used to semi hydro) All the best, you got this â˜șïžđŸŒ±

I recommend regular potting soil and bottom watering/self-watering pot. These like consistent timing on watering. They're drama queens and tend to shock and sacrifice a leaf or two if they're moved into a new environment. These like a relatively tight fit in their pot, and can be vulnerable to overwatering/root rot. It's normal for them to go dormant if they get cold enough in winter. Alocasias can also be prone to chemical/mineral sensitivity, so if the leaves turn weird colors, check for that and root rot. In my experience alocasias have taken a little bit of learning to figure out what each type of tantrum means, but they bounce back well. Once you find what it likes, it'll be a happy camper
