Rule of thumb is always check the plant before buying. That’s from anyone or anywhere. There is nothing wrong with buying from big box stores. Because of tissue culture you’re able to get plants that were unattainable and in the hundreds to thousands. Plants I paid hundreds for are now available in big box stores for pennies compared to few years back. Facebook marketplace is good too. I wouldn’t worry about where I buy my plant but the condition it’s in instead.

0 gillningarAlways check for bugs first thing. If you see, I’d avoid the whole shelf. They probably on all the plants.
4 gillningarLocal nurseries are great but can have the same issues as bigger box stores, and usually a higher price. I think Lowe’s and Home Depot are great, just more “common” plants usually. Everyone else was spot on with the checking every plant thoroughly! I just brought home spider mites 🤦🏻♀️ Highly recommend joining your local plant group on facebook! It’s such a welcoming and nurturing community! Generally some really cool plants and some people have great pricing!

1 gillaHaving worked in a garden center I know the challenges of keeping your plant material pest free. If you treat chemically you have those customers who are opposed to chemical treatment. On the other hand if you treat organically it can be difficult to control pests on thousands of plants. That being said, wherever you choose to buy examine the plant, if you see pests determine how severe the infestation is and ask the attendant if they would treat it for you before you take it home. I know that's not ideal but sometimes it's worth the risk depending on the pest. Also sometimes the pests you see could be dead because they have already addressed the issue.

0 gillningarI’ve bought most of mine from Etsy, but many from Home Depot and Lowe’s.
1 gillaI buy lots of my plants from different Amish farmers markets and small businesses. If the small businesses know what they are doing, then it’s a bingo for me!!! And farmers market, most of them in my area are super great at caring for plants! Hope this helps! 😊
