Hey! Only had this Ponytail Palm for 3 months and not repotted it yet- not sure how root bound they want to get before repotting. What do we think? Is it time now, or if not how much more root bound does it need to be? Also do you think this soil is good to keep (the one it came with) or should I switch to a succulent soil?

    i hear that the general guide to repotting is when the bulb at the base starts getting too close to the rim of the pot. i think you can wait until next year

    There’s plenty of soil still in that root ball so I wouldn’t repot it yet. Also what plantgeek said about the base of the plant. The only time I replace the soil around a plants roots when repotting is if there is an issue with the soil or the mix is just completely awful for the plant. I try to just firmly tap the whole root ball against a hard surface (side of my cedar planter works great) and after 6ish hits it’s typically loosened the roots, removed any broken down soil that’s too small of a particulate, and broken up any compaction. Then I just put the whole thang in a new pot and backfill while tapping vigorously to settle the soil.
