Help! My mom recently got me an Elephant Bush for my birthday, but as soon as she gave it to me all the leaves were falling off and the stems are all drying out badly! There’s also lots of white fluff all over it that I thought might have been spiderwebs, so that could also be part of the issue? I’m not sure, but I want this little guy to go back to thriving! He’s got one stalk that looks like it’s doing alright, but then the rest of it is all drying and withered :( Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I can't tell if the white stuff is mealy bugs or powdery mildew. Sorry i can't help you. I killed mine very fast. But they need some very good light. My sister in law puts hers in a big window facing north east. Hope that helps alittle bit..

To give you an idea of how much light these guys like, I live in Arizona in the blazing sun and they are extremely popular outdoor plants. Mine do best if they do get some afternoon shade, but they definitely like a ton of light. Can’t say about water, because I water mine a lot simply because of where I am.

That might be part of my issue. I live in the middle of the woods and none of my windows get a whole lot of sunlight, so he’s under a grow light right now. I might up the hours and move him closer to see if that helps?

I’m sure it would. I actually have grow lights all over my house, lol. I kind of have the opposite problem. Too much light and heat outside and there’s very little I can keep alive out there!

If it’s under a grow light I would say 5-6 hours of light is good. Also, get a neem oil spray and spray all over the plant. Get all the nooks and crannies and gently wipe it off the plant with a microfiber cloth/glove. For harder to reach spots you could use a q-tip. If you use neem oil please remember that it can burn your plant if you put in direct sun. I would apply in the evening when the grow lights have turned off. Keep spraying neem oil every 7-10 days.

Thanks so much! I’ll look into that!

Also, elephant bush plants are succulents. Make sure you let their soil dry out between waterings. Mine is about the same size as yours and I bottom water for 20-30 minutes till the top soil gets moist. If you think you have mealy bugs you can research a diluted hydrogen peroxide mix and pour into the soil to help kill the eggs. You can pour this mix every once in a while to keep your soil healthy as well.
