Is this normal for a zz? Little background: I saved it from Walmart. It had been overwatered and started to spot. Thanks in advance!

Yes, especially if it’s been overwatered. I understand from another Planta member that these plants were originally from Africa and they developed this nifty method of storing water for long dry stretches. I have five ZzZz‘s and they all have these big water storage bulbs in their root systems. You do know that ZZ’s don’t get watered until they are bone dry, right?! Also, I imagine the water bulbs in this ZzZz, may be a bit larger than normal do to overwatering. Hopefully the water it’s gotten in the past isn’t going to harm it; just keep it on your Planta schedule. Always check to make sure it’s really dry, preferably using a wooden dowel, like a chopstick, to measure dryness before you water. Any questions on that, just ask the group or send a text back to me. Enjoy your ZzZz; they’re very pretty plants, aren’t they! 😊💚🪴
3 gillningarThank you so much! It’s my first zz and I’d been wanting one for a long time. This guy has been sitting on a shelf with no water for probably 2ish months now. It started to look stronger so I took it down to look at and see if it needed water when I saw those root balls!! So crazy and such a smart plant. I didn’t know that background. Thank you for sharing!
2 gillningarYep! I’ve shared this tip before but I highly recommend keeping a ZZ plant in a clear pot so you can keep an eye on the rhizomes (they kinda look like potatoes). Only water when the rhizomes are slightly wrinkled/deflated looking. I watered mine 2 months ago and the rhizomes still look plump, so it doesn’t need water yet!
5 gillningarWicked cool Zz
1 gillaThanks so much! It’s the raven ZZ. Love it! 🪴 🖤
0 gillningarSo my Planta app says to water my Zz every 10 days which seems very different than these recommendations…. Do you all find that happens often? I’m such a new plant mom that I really need all the help I can get.
0 gillningarI do find that with several of my plants but conditions vary. Planta is adjusting my watering schedule based on my data but I don’t know yet how accurate it is. I have learned to use my best judgement, using a dowel to check water, and appreciate the reminder to check on my plant. I refer to the plant care info a lot. Most of the time it tells you how dry or moist the soil should be before watering.
2 gillningarYep I find that the Planta schedule is usually accurate with my tropical plants, but not accurate at all with desert plants such as ZZ plants or succulents. With any plant, when Planta tells me to water, I check the soil first. Planta isn’t always accurate.
2 gillningarI too ALWAYS check the soil first. Planta suggestions are crafted around all the information being entered and according to the description. They are merely offering suggestions. I now see that the ‘skip’ option allows you to select that the soil is still wet. So cool!
