Trandescantias grow fast so it’s a good idea to give them a trellis to climb :) On mine, the leaves that were too close to the soil would get soft and fall off from getting wet, so bottom-watering can prevent that. I wish I had known - the original plant only lives 2 years, so you have to take cuttings and propagate it for it to live longer. Mine grew super long and then suddenly died right around the 2 year mark, so I wish I had known that

These don’t usually actually die after a few years, but as they get older they start losing the leaves near the top and in the middle. This won’t kill the plant, but it doesn’t look great. When mine do this, I chop off pieces from the bottom and stick them directly back into soil. I also wrap the old, bare tops of the vines around the pot because the nodes will root directly into the soil. As for care, these ones need lots of direct light, otherwise they get super long and leggy. I just put mine on a south-facing windowsill 3 weeks ago and it has already sprouted 7 new shoots! For the watering, I let them dry out completely, but it’s a balancing game because they don’t like to be dry for longer than a day and will let you know. For propagation, they can be propped in soil or water, but I prefer soil. They root much quicker in water (I’ve had one sprout roots after 2 days) but they tend to die when they get transplanted in soil. However, they root very easily in soil, and I’ve never experienced any problems this way. As for support, you can use a trellis, but these are crawling plants, not climbing, so they don’t necessarily need the support. They can also work as trailing plants, although I’ve found that fluminensis varieties of tradescantia don’t work as well as other kinds. I just let mine crawl across the surface whatever windowsill or table it’s on. I hope my advice helps! Tradescantia are one of my favorite plants, and I have six of them. Good luck!
