Newbie plant question: when transplanting a new baby from the greenhouse to a new pot at home should I use all new potting soil or should I mix in with the soil it came in? Or maybe a better question is, do i just leave it in the plastic container or came in and just drop it in my decorative pot? And keep it simple? What is the right answer?Thank you friends :) excited to be here

I’d leave it in its original pot for at least six months to a year. Unless something seems to be going awry with the plant, then keeping it in its original soil will help it adjust to the new environment it’s in. :)

some conflicting advice - I always repot as soon as I bring a new plant home! I like to have control over the growing medium and know exactly what’s going on with the roots. this can be a good time to check for any pests or damage I might have missed when purchasing. and sometimes you discover a pesky little cage thing around your root ball. i have never had a problem with my plants’ adjustment period. i look at it like this: transitioning from greenhouse/nursery to your home is always going to introduce an element of stress to the plant, I take the approach of getting all the ā€œtraumaā€ out of the way up top. it hasn’t failed me yet! good luck!

Ahhh, good point, just getting it all over with up front. Have you found it work for those particularly sensitive plants though? Like alocasias and oxalis

yes! even my alocasia, although i am VERY gentle with the roots. i’ve never had any problems with my oxalis either — they just grow like the weeds they are

actually since you mentioned those both specifically it feels worth mentioning that i keep them both in the same suuuper light mix of 1:1 fine peat and perlite

Ahhh cool, might have to try that, and love the soil ratio too, definitely need to keep it light

I always repot as soon as I bring them home. I subscribe to the ā€œget it over with up frontā€ ideal, and it has worked just fine for all of mine. Also, since repotting is just about my favourite part of having an indoor jungle, I literally get new plants so that I have an excuse to stick my hands in dirt šŸ˜„ so why would I wait? On that note, I can’t wait until Springtime! 😁

I try to avoid repotting at all costs!šŸ˜‚ I buy it in a size I can live with for at least a year! The exceptions are repotting because it’s root bound, sickly or the pot is improperly sized. I repot these after 30 days. I have a few large plants that have been in their pots 10 years to 15 years like my ponytail palm, elephant ears and tradescantia Purple Heart. I just add manure on the soil as a top dressing. Works for me. šŸ˜†
