I recently bought and potted these plants in these adorable glass mushroom mugs (bc they are too fragile for actual coffee drinking imo). Plus the chives in the terracotta; also no drainage). They have no drainage, but I read that to "imitate" drainage I could put rocks at the bottom under dirt. Do you think this would be beneficial? Or do you have anything else I should add as well? Or other suggestions! I just really love these mugs and want to use them. Plants: String of Pearls (has some rocks mixed with soil), Lucky Bamboo, Spider Plant, and Purple Waffle Plant

I’m not sure I would go so far as to say it “imitates” drainage, but if drainage isn’t possible I suppose it’s the next best thing. Since they are clear that will probably help you monitor moisture levels, at least! I totally get wanting to use the mugs though - they are super cute! Have you thought about doing a semi-hydroponic setup?

semi hydro is a good option too!

I’d say go semi-hydro, drill holes in the glass, or get plastic insert pots. Rocks do not replace or “imitate” drainage.

Get clear plastic pots to slide inside the mugs and repot them in there! That way the mug acts like a tray for the water that goes through the soil and the plant has a chance to re-absorb it . You can dump out whatever is left over in the mug a couple hours after you water the plant. You can find them on Amazon :)

i don’t like the rocks method — eventually you’ll have roots sitting in water anyway. BUT that being said, i have an orchid in a glass jar. if you’re set on using these mugs, I’d make sure the soil has a bit of bark and extra perlite, and since it’s clear glass you can water and “soak” for a few minutes and then pour off the excess and you’ll be able to see if there’s water sitting. the soil you have now is going to hold onto waaay too much moisture the glass will retain moisture for a while so that’s why you want to make sure it’s very well draining with the bark and perlite, making it easy to pour off the excess

Totally agree with Tabi, clear plastic pots are the best to monitor root growth and see how wet the soil is , easy to remove to drain when watering.
