How dry is my soil supposed to be when I water generally? Like it’s always just a bit moist and cold. Is that just or does it have to be dry like a drought

Depends on the type of plant, really. Plants like monstera and pothos like to be 100% dry before they are watered. Then some plants like cala lily’s and nerve plants don’t like to be completely dry before they are watered. I would definitely make sure that either way and no matter the plant, the top layer of soil is completely dry before watering. Overwatering can cause root rot.

it depends on the plant: succulants, cacti, or any plant that stores water (zz & snake plants, ponytail palms) like to be DRY DRY before watering, so i wait until succulant leaves look a teeny bit wrinkly before watering (i dont have a ponytail palm so i cant speak too much on when it is showing signs of needing water). more common houseplants like monsterras or maybe philodendrons, pothos, will probably like to be a tiny bit moist beforr watering, so if youve heard of the skewer or chopstick method to check the soil, you can use that to see if it AT LEAST halfway dry. you can also tell they need water if the leaves become droopy or softer/easier to bend. some plant's leaves will curl when theyre thirsty, like my beauty star calethia. of course there will probably be exeptions to these generalizations, so a quick google search, or a post on here can help! also, going off a hard schedule isnt always the best, as the lighting conditions, temperature, humidity, and even air flow can affect how OFTEN a plant requires watering. hope this helps, good luck!!

It depends on the plant. Usually you want it to be halfway or somewhat dry before watering again
