I need your help guys!! I recently bought these pink syngoniums. They were doing well to begin with then noticed the bottom leaves dropping off within 2 weeks of buying them. I inspected the roots and nothing looks mushy/rotting but the base of the stem has these brown spots on them (the picture is them after drying out overnight). Are the stems rotting?? Can I save it at all? The leaves look healthy but idk what I can do to save itđŸ˜© please help if you have any experience with this

to double check if it is not root rot, i would give it a smell, but if it’s not stinky, i can only recommend a few options. but first i would probably prune any leaves that are dying/dead so the plant can focus its energy on new growth, and prune any of the yucky roots. you can either repot it in new potting soil, and treat that soil with a fungicide just in case, or, i would soak their bases+roots in a diluted fungicide mixture for 5-10 minutes, and leave them sitting in water, as they are pretty resilient and tolerate different environmental conditions. it will definitely bounce back with the right care. example of syngoniums in water:

if it shows signs of too much struggling if you put it in water, some plants may struggle with that adjustment, so i would try to keep it in whatever conditions it might have already been living in, and make sure it’s the right potting medium for syngoniums as there’s a chance that if you bought them from a retail store they might not have been in the right medium but idk lol sorry im rambling.

This is really helpful thanks! Couple of questions, I’m thinking of growing them in water now since I feel the soil might not have had enough aeration through it. Could I put the roots in pumice and water? Also can I put fungicide in the water that it sits in? Thanksâ˜ș

I wouldn’t leave it sitting in fungicide for too long at a time, you can also spray it with fungicide and leave it on that way, but plants can be sensitive to chemicals. i say experiment because that’s what i would do but i wouldn’t take a risk while it’s adjusting you can use pumice if you want, just know if you switch to hydroponics i believe you’ll need a different kind of fertilizer for it.

I just repotted my syngoniums and had the same thing. For mine, the brown was superficial and prob just where the soil line was against the plant and sort of stained it

Were those leaves healthy or falling off, cause mine seemed be weaker than the rest and easily fell off

I think mine were sort of like sheaths that protect new growth then just get brown when they are done doing their job and can easily be pulled off

You could also use H2O2 in a spray or diluted if you use it as a soak. That would kill fungus

Mine has 4 plants in one so I wasn’t really paying a ton of attention. Syngoniums seem pretty resilient though. So I think yours will be ok
