I have about 25 of these Japanese pencil hollies and recently about 4 of them have started to die turn brown like pic attached. The rest seem to be fine. Any ideas suggestions what could be causing this and how to correct?? They have been planted for just over 2 years. Thank you in advance, Jody.

That’s really interesting. I work at a nursery in zone 4A and usually this happens to our evergreens from the outside inward because of winter scorching or cold winds. When ours brown from the inside outward, it’s usually a water problem. The base of those 2 looks small as well- could there be an animal or something similar chewing on them? Weird that it’s only happening to a few.

There are several deer that are out and about this time of year but it’s the ones in the middle that are affected. I would think the deer or another “critter” would start on the outside since it’s easier access? Thx for the reply

The buds, stems, and growth at the base of a plant are easier to digest- deer use their bottom teeth pressing against the top of their mouth to tear apart the plants which is why when a deer eats something it’s usually serrated vs rabbits that will usually tear something off at a clean angle.
