My stepmom recently bought a Venus fly trap for my little brother around three days ago. It isn’t doing too well, a lot of it has died. I don’t even know if they watered it since they’ve had it. Am I gonna be able to save her? I’m very new and me and my brother only have one plant each. I just don’t want my brother to be upset. I caught a fly and placed it on the mouth or whatever those heads are. But it still hasn’t opened up to eat it. Don’t know what to do :(

While it is very normal for the “traps” to die off and turn brown like this, I’m shocked it’s like every single one. Are you making sure it’s constantly wet soil? It needs high humidity and constant moisture. Those traps can also die if it’s catching too many things. I think I legitimately killed mine by putting it where I had a lot of gnats and it used too much energy “eating” the gnats. A common misconception about Venus fly traps is that you have to feed them. It’s probably better if you don’t. And be careful when watering because any time the trap closes it’s using energy and will die faster. If a water droplet hits it and it makes it close - energy wasted. My suggestion: remove any stems that are fully black. This is normal and they should be removed. If there are any steps partially black, cut those as well. Create some space for new growth because right now it’s kinda all over the place. It might or come back and that’s ok! These are very hard to keep alive.

Thanks so much, it hasn’t been watered at all because we need distilled water. I originally wasn’t taking care of it, my stepmother was. She said she would go to the store today if she has time to buy some water. Till then I placed it inside because it get around 90-100 degrees in the summer time and was told it’s too hot to keep outside. There’s some flies around the window I placed the fly trap at and it’s getting direct sunlight. I’ve just now removed all black spots

Ahh ok sounds like it was desperate for water. I don’t think you *need* distilled water. Any water is better than no water :)

They don’t eat dead insects. Not sure if you are giving them that. I have carnivorous plant food I keep on hand. If you have reverse osmosis or fridge filter water that works. You can also let tap water sit out for 24 hours. That works better than straight from the source.
