Soooo, I was looking at Skittle my African violet this morning and was going to pull a dead leaf off and… the whole thing popped off the stem so easily🤦🏼‍♀️ What happened?! It’s not mushy at all and everything looks healthy. Did it get to dry? I just watered her yesterday and she was pretty dry. Is there anyway to save her??

You could propogate the top part by rooting it in water. The stem may grow a new plant out of it if you give it a clean cut and add some sort of plastic dome/cover/bag for humidity. As far as what happened, it may have just been one of those things where the plant snaps more easily even if it’s healthy. I’ve learned the hard way myself to always trim off dead leaves instead of trying to pull them. I bet it can come back!

Awwh dang! Hate it when that happens! There’s an older video on youtube from the African Violet Society of America called, “How to repot a long neck and also cure root rot.” I’ve been using her technique for years to rehab my violets and propagate new plants. I would consider pulling the remaining root ball up for inspection to get a better idea of how she was growing beneath that weak spot in the stem where she snapped. You know, for science! Good luck cleaning her up 😊

Yes I had to cut the long neck off last summer and repot. Watch the videos on YouTube

To me it looks like she got top heavy! What a bummer. I'd go to that African violet website and see what they have to say about propagating.

Mine did that years ago. I firget if i gave it a fresh stem cut at the bottom or not, but other than that i just set it on top of some moist soil and he re-rooted just fine. The top section is very healthy and should prop easily. The bottom stem will heal and start over if there aren't any root health problems. You can also prop some leaves as a backup
