I’m unfortunately facing a case of the mealybugs from a plant I rescued recently, which has spread to my klenia petraea, Julie. This is my first time dealing with mealybugs on one of my own plants, but I know the usual treatment is with isopropyl alcohol. Here’s my dilemma: Julie seems to hate anything being put/sprayed on her leaves, even insecticidal soap or neem oil, so I fear using the alcohol will definitely lead to damaged leaves. She’s also pretty densely populating her pot, so trying to put systemic granules on the small bits of soil that is exposed on the surface would be pretty tedious, so I’d love to know if anyone has any creative treatment options for Miss Julie, cause she’s one of my favorites, and has taken a long time to grow to this size, so I don’t consider tossing her an option. TIA for any advice. It’s very greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays, everyone! ā„ļø

Use alcohol only as a spot treatment directly on visible mealies. For the rest of treatment, you can use something gentler like neem or hydrogen peroxide. You can dilute it, but that may mean it takes longer to get rid of the mealies. I've also had good results with alcohol spot treating and physically removing mealies, and just being very consistent and quick whenever i see new ones. If you're chill about bugs, you could also try quarantining it in a butterfly cage/mosquito net and putting some ladybugs in with no insecticides. Also look up a "mealybug destroyer"; it's a kind of beetle that's super effective. If you live in their range, you could try those. If you live outside their range, you can look on inaturalist for a closely related beetle that lives near you, since the whole family should be mealy predators.

Thanks so much for all of the options to choose from! I really appreciate it. I have heard about a specific beetle that eats mealybugs, but I didn’t know ladybugs were an option! 😃Thank you! šŸ˜ŠšŸ™

I used what i think is an insecticidal soap for mealybugs, mixed with water. (Its called smth else in swedish but i know it kills bugs and is safe ish for the plant) And for a plant like that (super dense) i would fill a bucket/sink whatever with a water/soap mixture and turn the whole pot upside down and DIP it, and shimmy it around in the water. Thats the best way to get EVERYTHINGG covered. But if she doesnt like anything on her leaves, maybe its not an option. Just what i did for mine (not this exact plant) and it worked out. Best of luck to u! <3

Thank you! šŸ™ So far I did a spot treatment in case she decides to turn on me for trying to save her from the tiniest amount of isopropyl alcohol, then I used an eye dropper to get some systemic granules in all the nooks and crannies of soil I could get to beneath all her leaves. I’m hoping I caught it early enough, but I’ll give updates if she decides to betray me after all cause of the alcohol, in case anyone else has this plant and the same issues with treating it.
