Hi Planta Community! First post and first question! I have this Black Olive tree. I got it a few months ago as a gift. We had a brief rough time with the shock of moving and being repotted. The plastic pot it came it was badly damaged. It is now in a ceramic pot. I have it up on some tile to help keep the drain hole open at the bottom. It’s under a grow light for 12 hours a day. It is now doing so much better! No more leaves falling off and I’m seeing new growth. My question is this. Would you recommend removing the bottom limb highlighted in the picture with blue? If so when? Now, or should I wait another season? I don’t know much about it from before so I don’t know how old it is. Planta recommended that I prune it and I think it’s definitely too young for that but I did wonder about that one branch.

That lower growth looks like a water shoot or a sucker. These are growths that pop up every year on trees and shrubs beginning in spring. The one on your plant is probably a sucker based on its location. The size is thin compared to the nominal branches. They suck energy from the tree. You can prune it especially since it’s the beginning of the growing season. 🍀🪴

I agree. It does look like a sucker. I wasn’t sure if that applied to olive trees though so thank you for your advice!

Most olive trees are either grafted or created from cuttings and I’m guessing your is the latter so it isn’t likely to be a sensitive seedling. I agree the the branch is probably a watershoot or sucker and should be removed to let the tree focus its energy in growth. This is the perfect time to trim off and shape it since it should be pushing new shoots.
