i’m helping a new plant shop open up in my town! the owner is a flower farmer so she doesn’t know much about house plants and asked me to help make a list. i know what i like, but im curious what other people are looking for in their local plant shops? what’s some of your favorite plants that you’ve kept?
if you wouldn’t made sharing how much you paid for the plant that would be helpful too! she asked me to help with prices but i strictly shop clearance and revive the plant.
here’s a pic of my syngonium mojito ❤️

Varigated plants are definitely sought after. I love my tropical plants in general. It might be helpful to look at price listings around your area for those plants or online shops. Good luck to yall!

My baby philodendron and baby african violet that I got last month were 6.99 each. Others I look for are pathos, orchids (I see them going for about $19) cacti (I've personally sold babies off my aloe Vera for $5 a piece on Facebook, lol).

I’d have at least one big large form monstera.
Thai cons can be bought really cheaply online just as a normal consumer but are still like $50-75 for a 3-4” pot at shops where I live, so I think you can get good margins there.
Philodendron hederaceum varieties are usually like $25-30 for an 8” HB around here. Micans might go for slightly more.
Especially heading to spring I’d buy some caladium bulbs and plant in 4” pots; they’re stunning and easy to sell as gifts for people.
Alocasia also seem to move quickly around here and are usually $10-30 for a 4” pot depending on maturity and shop.
I definitely agree on pothos and would 100% include manjula because that one shows up less at garden centers and is very striking.
Make sure there are some heart leaf philos, especially crawlers. People love that they can just let it crawl into a new pot and then cut the stem to separate rather than worry about repotting.
String of plants of all kinds. They’re generally low maintenance and crucially not toxic to pets and people will come in looking for that. A little 2” with a couple strands goes for $7-10 where I’m at and a good hanging basket can be up to the $50-70 range for a string of hearts depending on length. Hearts and pearls are gonna be the big ones; people go for bananas less.

Also on the subject of nontoxic to pets:
Hoya - huge range in price depending on the species
Money tree - depends on size but I feel like an 8-10” for $40-45 is solid
Calathea/geoppertia - most 4” would be $12-17 in my area
Peperomia (hope and watermelon are always hits) - less, maybe like $10-13 for a 3-4”

And then I think important to keep plant hobbyists coming back:
Anthurium are definitely still trendy. A 3-4” velvet is probably $35-45 in my area for any of the common species (forgetii, crystallinum) and I really haven’t seen strap leafs show up near me yet but I assume they’d sell well. Vittarifolium is so hardy, too.
I also think begonias are on their way up. A classic maculata variety like wightii or double dot is usually like $15-20 for a 4” around here and maybe $30-35 for a 6”. I think cane begonias overall are gonna be a decent bet. And then I’ve also seen a lot of Rex begonias sold for maybe $5-10 depending on the variety in little 2” pots as plants to stock a terrarium (and then they also sell the terrariums there)

i live a good calatheas! theyre picky, (use distilled water) but so pretty. i cant remember how much i got mine for, but theyre nothing too special, so probably anywhere from 5-20 dollars depending on the size of the plant/pot :)
carnivorous plants are also super cool, but a) need a butt ton of light, and b) also only take distilled water. they are very often (in my eyes) great show stoppers, but have specific needs, and might not last long in store because of this. if youre able to set up a small section for them, i think they would do well.
i also second the philodendron, monsterra, peace lily, and succulant suggestions
also just throwing out an idea because I have been sitting with it for a while but I can't really make it happen right now because i'm still in school, but if you'd like, feel free to take inspo it and make it your own, and/or pass it along:
a plant shop mixed with a coffee shop.
this idea came about when a smaller plant shop popped up in town, and then closed somewhat shortly after, leaving their other location in the mall. i have now watched this other location slowly downsize and try different product combos to stay in buisness.
it could be a sit down coffee shop, but make it full of plants. they could work as both decoration and be for sale. the coffee is what would bring a wider variety of people into the store, and, assuming theres a regular flow of people, keep the shop in buisness. then the plants would add to the atmosphere of the place, and since theyre for sale, can bring in some extra revenue and again, a wider variety of people.
now ik this idea has lots of holes (training employees to make coffee and know a bit about plants, etc. have some fun rolling the vision/idea around in your head tho, its fun to think about :)
good luck to the owner with the new shop!! 💚🌱

Her best chance of selling plants that her local community wants to buy is to contact the suppliers that will supply her plants. They will know the best selling plants in her area if she only plans to sell locally. The selling prices will be based on the wholesale prices from the supplier plus the mark up. She should do a market evaluation of the local selling prices. Prices differ across the country.
