I just picked up this 4 inch plant from Trader Joe’s, but I don’t know exactly what it is. I like it because it is very purple, much more purple than the picture actually shows, and has tiny leaves, so perhaps it will stay small? So, what is this? TIA!

Tradescantia purple bridal veil! I don't have any experience with the veil, but I assume it's like any other tradescantia. Gets iffy in the winter, more colorful under full sun, and should be occasionally pruned lol.

Thanks, I knew it was a Tradescantia something, but Planta came up with something ridiculous, and I knew it wasn’t that. Purple bridal veil… That’s a lovely name; hopefully it will live up to its sound!

Tradescantia for sure. The soil got too dry and has pulled away from the sides. You may have to bottom water and bottom fertilize until the soil swells to fill the pot again. You can cut, propagate in water and put back into the pot to get fullness.

TXS for that info! I did get her bottom watered, and right after, I sprayed her with NEEM, which I normally do with incoming plants. She is looking a bit skimpy, so I will take your advice, and when she gets a few longer stems, I’ll chop and prop and replant to make her look prettier!

This is my Jose Puig variety. He’s dark and lovely with a neon green edge on new leaves! It shows how it started in a little 4 inch pot. I chopped and propped for almost 2 seasons to get it into a 6 inch pot. I’m still chopping and propping in a ziplock bag. 😁

Your plant is lovely, and BTW, thanks for your post! I noticed in one of your pics that your props were in a plastic bag, which I’ve never seen before; I’ve only propped in water. Can you tell me just a bit how you go about this? TIA!
