New plant mom and it’s been a few weeks now. I’m nervous about killing my babies off. Penelope (top left) is a ZZ plant. Fifi (right) is a snake plant. And Raveena (bottom left) is a Raven ZZ plant. I feel like Penelope is growing huge and might need to be repotted and Raveena is trying to die at the bottom. Any tips?

For these three you’re going to want to avoid overwatering, especially the zz plants. If you haven’t already, I’d get those two in succulent soil. All three are very hardy to drying out, so err on the side of dry before watering. Snake plants can grow fairly fast. I repot mine when they have new growth “pups” popping up. Yours looks like it has one maybe so you’d probably be good to go for repotting

I have that Raven ZZ; from Lowe’s? So, it was super rootbound and the roots were coming up from the soil. I separated them and repotted them into new pots. I also went bigger and deeper so the roots and whatever those big balls called are would be comfy in the pot. Sorry. I don’t know terms because I’m still new to all of this too. I literally research a bunch then when I buy new plants because they’re so pretty, I look up proper care. Researching has helped a lot for general care.

The “balls” are called “rhizomes” — it’s a part of the root system that stores water for the plant to use for later, like a camel with its humps! đŸ«

Also - ZZ plants like to be root bound and stay squished in their pots so be careful about repotting. And I only water mine twice a month because they’re so sensitive to overwatering!

Do you know why the leaves are turning red or what that could mean?

It could mean “fertilizer burn” if you use too much fertilizer (especially liquid) and it wasn’t diluted with enough water
