I have a couple corms that are just starting to sprout little roots. I see people starting them in stratum and perlite. Is that the best way to start? What’s next and when?

That is the way I start and it hasn’t failed me yet! I use 50/50 stratum perlite mix. I use a 2oz to go cup in a 3oz cup. Put in a wick for a Jerry rigged self watering setup. Then I cover it with a lid or another 3oz cup. In the beginning, I start with no holes for 100% humidity and over time I add holes to acclimate back to normal humidity as the plant starts to grow. If you don’t have a soldering iron, you should get a cheap one on amazon to help you make these holes. If it’s a brand new corm, I lay on top of the soil and peel off the outer brown shell. If it’s more mature and starting to peak out, I just nuzzle it into the substrate a little bit. I used to completely bury the corm but now I leave exposed because it seems to do better. I hope this helps! šŸ«¶šŸ¼šŸŖ“

Very helpful. Where do you get your cups? Is there a brand of stratum you like? I need to get everything from Amazon cause I have a gift card for Mother’s Day. My kids wanted to make sure I got plant stuff. I see you have a little green house. Do you have recommendations? And do you put a grow light on it and the humidifier gage?

Amazon has it all! I get the 2oz ones from when we order out but you can buy those too obviously. Fluval stratum. I use this display case for figurines as a greenhouse. I had to use my soldering iron to melt holes to get the grow lights in there with the ones I’m using. I like barina or sansi grow lights. Lots of options of the type depending on your setup. I also have a heat mat under both of the mini greenhouses with a hygrometer inside. You do want to open it up to let them have fresh air once in a while. Added pics of everything I used for this (except the perlite - I think I have miracle grow brand but anything would work). And another pic of the complete setup. Happy to answer any more questions or help out! I love plants and love helping others grow them too!

The barina strips are held up with magnets. And I used sansi pucks and just laid them on top lol If you want to talk more. Feel free to reply or I can even give you my # if it’s easier 😊

Do you use the same process for propagations that are rooted? I’ve got a Brazil and I think a neon pathos that have great roots and seem ready for the next step. Would you suggest stratum/pearlite and the ā€œgreen houseā€ until their roots are strong? Or do you just do this process with corms?

For really small plants or infant props with roots, I leave in here as long as I can until they don’t fit or I need more room. Mostly bc they grow faster than if I took them out. You absolutely can still grow props outside of a greenhouse setup. Just noticed it goes way faster in one. For things like pothos and syngonium that I prop, I use big clear bins with lids. With a grow light, heating pad and computer fan to give some air circulation. No matter what, I always would use stratum/perlite for corms or props. I used to use stratum only but it tends to disintegrate way faster and it gets sludgy. I will start with water for pothos and syngonium cuttings. With pothos nodes only, I’ll throw them in stratum/perlite. Didn’t have good luck with Sphagnum moss. And you can also use the puddle method with corms. Just tried it for the first time. Once I got some roots, I put them in the stratum/perlite setup.

I ordered the little display case, the humidifier reader, heat mat, stratum and grow lights for the case. I need to get the little cups and rope. Got one of my dream plants today. Rattlesnake plant!!

Question about the computer fan. Did you have to drill holes to get it in there? How does it handle the humidity?

If you have a sweatshirt with a drawstring you don’t use or a shoelace, that works too! I try to find anything around the house that I can make work. For instance, to go cups from Starbucks or any fast food are great to have a mini individual greenhouse lol. I love the way rattlesnakes look but I killed my first calathea and have a little PTSD from it šŸ˜. I was a beginner when I got one so I’m sure i wouldn’t kill it now. They are just finicky

So for the fan, I used double sided tape in my bin. I don’t have one in the display case. It does get rusty bc i do mist inside the bin or case. Everyone i follow on youtube tends to use them. I think if I didn’t mist it wouldn’t be so beat up. Otherwise it does the job!

How do you plug it in when it’s inside the case? Did you drill a hole for the cord? I also have my grow lights laying on top of the case. Will it get too hot?

For my bin, I could put the cord over the side and the lid would close. For the display case, I used my soldering iron to make a hold for the lights to be inside. You can seal the hole back with some of the water strip seal (I didn’t do it bc I was lazy). You could also drill a hole but it’s gonna be a few drills to get that cord end through it. I did 2 holes on 1 case and 1 hole on the other and pulled the cords through all of them so just 1 long string through both cases with both lights. And I also have my pucks on top of the case and it hasn’t got too hot yet. It gets warm. Prob should read directions to make sure it’s šŸ’Æ safe lol.

I felt the top of the case and it’s not hot at all. There’s no precipitation inside. I’ve got a small prop container next to it that fits on the heat mat and it’s totally humid. I’ll send a picture later. Just got home from work.

I just got back from visiting my dad in CA for a week and all my corms are sprouting! The ones I put in the little shot glasses actually have leaves starting! So excited!

Ahhhh that’s awesome. And the nice thing about having them in the case is that you can go away for a week and because of the humidity, they don’t usually use up all their water. I need to see pics!! I’m so excited for you šŸ˜
