Hey guys ! How would you protect each of these plants for winter ? Arbor-vitae on the left and Boxwood buis green on the right. I brought them inside temporarily, but I can't keep them where they are and need to put them back outside.

Well, without knowing where you are and how cold itās going to get how oftenāplants in the ground survive better than plants in pots because the ground keeps the roots warmer. So mulch them, first of all, to protect the top of the soil. If thereās going to be a freeze, put a blanket around the pot to keep the roots toasty. You can also drape something loosely over the plant to keep wind and cold from destroying themājust make sure to put it on in the evening and remove it in the morning when the sun comes out so it doesnāt suffocate.
0 gillningarOh, my bad! I'm from Quebec (Canada) so our winters can be pretty harsh. Unfortunately I can't put them in the ground. I bought some huge styrofoam pots, would that be okay if I filled them with mulch or even leaves ? Also ; the way you worded it, it sounds like I need to put on/remove the drape every day. Is that what you meant ?

Well, the temperature drops overnight, and plants arenāt photosynthesizing because itās dark, so basically, yesācover them at night. But if itās too cold during the day they may die anyway. Obviously hibiscus are going to die outside in Siberia no matter what you do, I donāt know what boxwood and arborvitae can put up with.

Do you have a garage available to you? I have put potted plants in my garage (western ny) and it worked well. My garage had windows for sunlight.
0 gillningarI have a garage, but no sunlight :(
0 gillningarHm. I assume you are in an apartment? With a balcony? If thatās the case, I have an idea. What if you were to get some thin PVC and elbows. Build a box frame with that, and cover with thick clear vinyl. Something to put over the plant, but it will still get sun. It will be lightweight, so youāll have to secure it so it does not blow away.
0 gillningarNo I'm in a house and I have a yard, but these plants are on my deck and there's no spot in the ground that has enough sunlight for them. I bought styrofoam pots, can I put mulch or even leaves in them and then cover the pots with burlap ?
0 gillningarYes, that would keep the root system warmer. I was thinking of protecting the upper part of the plant. Technically, it will be dormant over the winter. I guess if you go the burlap way, you really donāt have to uncover anything every day. By uncovering, you really would be encouraging it to not go fully dormant. You want it to go fully dormant. My grandpa did this with his shrubs every year, it worked well. I donāt know WHAT I was thinking with the clear cover. Ignore all that š¬
