Hey everyone, I need help! I finally repotted my Monstera!!! And I used a clay pot with a drainage hole. A few concerns?!!!??? I googled that I don’t really need the drainage hole, has anyone experienced this???? If so what can use to close it up?? I’m asking because after I watered it, I now have a little water in the catcher and it’s making me nervous, Only because The clay pot is too big and heavy for the plant stand I have.. I have to purchase a new one. so at the moment it’s sitting in a chair, and I don’t want it to spill over!!! Does anyone have any suggestions?!???

Do not close the drainage hole. Monstera and most aroids need well draining soil/substrate. Think about where these grow in the wild, they like to climb trees in the jungle where they attach and climb trees with roots attaching to bark etc. by being native to that tropical environment it’s used to getting wet and drying quickly. So in your case, having a terra-cotta pot, which assists in drainage because it is porous, along with an airy soil and a well drained pot is the best way to emulate the Monstera’s natural environment. Because you have this well drained set up, when you water your plant the excess water that the roots cannot utilize will drain out quickly without retaining too much water. When you water it, keep going until the water is actively draining from the bottom. Then you just monitor moisture until the soil is dry (monstera do like a dry out period between watering).

That’s exactly what I was wondering!! I’ve never heard of NOT using a pot without a drainage hole!!

agree with everyone else’s advice. also, remove the excess water that drained into the catcher. it will prevent root rot and allow the roots to breathe.

Agree with Sydnei. If you leave water in the saucer, an unglazed pot will wick it up and it’s a little like overwatering. Let it dry out.

Definitely agree with all of the above, I always dump the water from drainage about 15-20 minutes after watering.
