What substrate do you prefer? For the ones that prefer a chunky mix which seems to be most aroids, I like to use coco chips, mixed with some pumice, perlite and horticultural charcoal. What have you all found that works well for you?

I love the soil mix at my local nursery! It does wonders for my plants!
1 gillaSee I don’t have good nursery around me, you are lucky
1 gillaThanks! I’m sure you’ll find one eventually!
0 gillningarI really dislike handling perlite even if logically I know it’s useful so I use basically everything else lmao. I use Molly’s Aroid Mix then add in more bark, coco coir, or potting mix if I need it to be more or less chunky. I also keep around sand for my ZZ plant and cacti to mix into the potting soil. I’ve been thinking about buying coco chips by themselves, they seem easier to work with than bark sometimes. Most of what I have are aroids since they seem to mesh the best with my brain 🤷🏻‍♂️ even my tradescantias are in chunkier soil than is probably recommended but it helps me not over water them. Would love suggestions for more things to keep around :)
1 gillaWhy do you dislike handling pearlite; is it dangerous in someway that I’m not aware of? TIA for your thoughts. 🤗💚🪴
0 gillningarNo I just literally don’t like physically touching it, it’s a texture thing
0 gillningarIt’s not quite the same but you can crumble up styrofoam if it comes in packages etc and use similarly to perlite! I still adore perlite, but it’s a nice bonus that it’s a way to recycle packaging
