Hi! Picked up this philodendron from Trader Joe’s today, and I’m wondering what the little white spots are. Also, is this a red sun, or something else? TIA!

Yikes honestly I can’t tell what it is by the pictures. Is it a type of residue? Could be a pest. Buying a plant with white stuff on it is terrifying to me though lol. Make sure you quarantine it as you should for all new plants for a few weeks to make sure there are no pests as that’s often the big way pests are introduced is bringing new plants home with pesky buddies along for the ride too that hop on all the fresh meat(plants).

Thank you! Plant is being quarantined, and I have not brought it near my others. I think there is some residue of hard water, but the smaller white dots all over the leaves seem more like a pest to me. I’m just hoping it’s not scale. I can try to get a better pic tomorrow maybe :)

I don’t think it’s scale as that’s more yellow and not white but possibly could be mealy bugs or mites? You can search those terms in the forum and find some good advice already shared I bet on treating them. Good luck! Gorgeous plant!

Try wiping the leaves with isopropyl alcohol. It will get rid of the spots if its scale or mineral build up, and it should even kill most pests if it is a pest.

Yikes. 😳. I recommend checking a plant thoroughly before buying. I’m surprised. I’ve never gotten a bad plant from Trader Joe’s.
