Help please! I recently bought this “choco calathea” which I had never heard of before. I’ve placed her in my living which has medium light. Very quickly some leaves died off and others are yellowing. I’m struggling to see what’s wrong, the soil was a little dry and I watered again. Drainage is good and she’s not sitting in water. Any thoughts?

Check the roots for rot and/or a root plug (meshy material around the root ball)

Calatheas are notorious for being dramatic af. Some things about care (generalized to the genus, not the choco calathea itself) 1. They like moist soil. My M.O. is to let soil dry for most my plants before waterings to prevent overwatering, fungus gnats, and root rot. But Calatheas don't like to be dry, so water them often! 2. Same goes for humidity. Calatheas are high humidity plants (60%+ indoor humidity). Their leaves will dry up and die if humidity is lower. 3. Calatheas are sensitive to lime in water. I live right on Lake Michigan, so our tap water is NOT well water and my plants love it. Gonna have to troubleshoot problems by changing your plants conditions one at a time to know what's wrong with it, like a little science experiment :)

Amazing thank you. It’s quite a high humidity room so hopefully that helps. I’ll let the soil dry out a bit and then go from there

I edited my comment, but what I meant to say was I dry most of my plants out EXCEPT for my Calatheas because they just need that moist soil, so water often
