Some of my plants are getting soil mold. How do I stop this? I’m new to plants and worried I’m gonna lose them already.

    Depending on the type of plant, mould might be a sign of too much water in the soil - in which case your plants might need chunkier soil with more drainage and/or less frequent watering. The only other way I’ve had mould like this is when I’ve left my plants damp in cold conditions - for me it was when I watered right before turning the heating off and going away for a long weekend.

    Mold on the soil usually happens when the conditions are staying damp for too long. No worries- it happens to everyone at some point! I would start by repotting the affected plants into fresh potting mix and removing as much as the old stuff as possible since it has mold. If you didn’t before, I’d suggest a super well draining, chunky soil mix. I see you added perlite already which is good; I like to do a mix of something like equal parts cactus soil, orchid bark, and perlite to make it super well-draining and aerated. Then I’d focus on letting the soil dry out more in between waterings- even if Planta is telling you to water, it’s best to check that the soil is dried out enough first. Tanner the Planter on youtube has some great videos about how to know when it’s time to water your plants that he can explain much better than I can in a comment. In addition, using well-draining planters, increasing the amount of light those plants are receiving, and adding a fan for airflow can help prevent mold in the future. Good luck!

    There’s organic fertilizers in your soil and it’s being broken down. Let it dry completely a few times and it’ll go away on its own. You can also scrape it off and put new soil on top.

    Thank you everyone! I sprayed some fungicide right after noticing and I hope it’s clearing up so now I’ll take your suggestions to keep it from returning!

    And I was using Miracle Gro soil which I now know caused my gnat issue too. The pieces you see on top of the soil are Mosquito Bits.
