Onyx Plant

Hi everyone, I recently bought a string of hearts and when i brought it home I found it had some sort of grubs in the soil. The plant looks healthy, and the last time I treated a plant for this problem (removed from pot, cleaned roots with water and hydrogen peroxide, repotted in new clean pot) the plant died pretty quickly afterwards. String of Hearts has been on my wishlist for years and id really prefer not to kill this plant. Does anyone have any advice? Should I just leave the grubs there? Will they spread to my other plants? Right now i have the SOH in quarantine until I figure out what to do. He seems to be really healthy but since this is my first time with a SOH I am not entirely sure.

Mhhm. I would say keep the plants seperated. Remove the root ball in its entirety from the pot. Instead of washing the roots, spray the roots with Hydrogen peroxide. And then use a pest control on the plant as a whole. I use Neem Oil extract and some water. Works amazingly for many types of bugs. You can buy premade spray bottles at garden centers. Continue to quarantine the SOH for a few weeks. Just make sure it has bright indirect light, and water when the soil is dry an inch below the surface. Believe me you don’t want bugs in all of you plants. It’s absolute chaos.

I have over 80 plants, so getting an infestation would be detrimental. That's why I quartentine plants when I bring them home. I only have a slight problem with fungas gnats at the moment and since I have several plants that prefer to be very moist I figure there isn't much i could do about it. These grubs scare me but I don't even know what they are or if they will hurt the plants. How heavily should I mix the hydrogen peroxide with water?

As long as you have an insecticide, it should help with the gnat problem. You use a Gnat Dunk in the water you use.

Is it ok to spay a plant with hydrogen peroxide straight not diluted? I am new to plants and just discovered you could use it to treat your water for hydro plants.

What that! I have this problem too with over 47 plants now! I bought a thing you plug into the wall.

As long as its 3%, yes you can directly spray the roots! Any greater percentage may hurt them

As long as its 3% HP I think you’ll be fine no matter how much you use. I prefer to use a spray bottle when I use HP

I'm not sure if I'm looking at this photo wrong, but they look like isopods and/or millipedes to me. Not to worry, they are both a good clean up crew, eating dead and decaying plant matter. Grubs are fleshy beetle larvae. If u dont wanna keep them, and also to help with gnats I use bonide houseplant insect control, but don't recommend if u have pets that mess with your plants.

Maybe it's my old eyes but I don't see anything concerning in the root picture

Be careful with the peroxide. Some plants can’t tolerate it. Was told to use it 1:4. I’m still very Leary about using it. Fungus gnats are my problem. Pill Bugs: Are They Friends Or Foes? Roly-polies (pillbugs) in houseplants are usually harmless, even beneficial, as they eat decaying matter, but too many might nibble live roots; they love moisture, so reduce watering, improve drainage, remove wet leaves, and use traps like beer cans or potato slices to control them. If this is what you have. I thought I seen one dead
