I got gifted this sunflower plant recently and have put her near to a big, South facing window. Planta recommended lots of sunlight as well as lots of water. I’ve been watering her by the Planta schedule (almost every other day in this very hot June in the UK) but she looks soooo worn out and crunchy, leaves browning still… She’s also attracting lots of flies? Any ideas on how to save her? 💚🤞

It’s too far from the window. They like full direct sunlight on their leaves. Move to the windowsill if you can’t move it outside. Only water when it dries out regardless of the Planta schedule. It looks overwatered. Fungus gnats thrive in continuously wet soil laying eggs on top. The larvae lives in the soil. Consider replacing the soil and increasing the pot size by 2 inches, if it’s root bound. Treat with Mosquito Bits/Dunks to kill the larvae. Fertilize regularly.

thank you so much for your help! I’ve moved her right up to the window in my living room as pictured, trimmed the dead parts off the leaves, and am going to water her a lot less frequently. I’ve never repotted any of my plants before because I’m scared I’ll damage them, and I’ve never dealt with root rot. Any tips? I really appreciate your help, thank you!!

Root rot looks like soft mushy and swampy smelling roots. Cut them off. Remove all the soil since it will have bacteria from the rot. Rinse the roots either hydrogen peroxide. Disinfect hands, pot and tools. Check online for photos of root rot. 🪴🍀
