Hello! I have a beautiful birds of paradise (Tweedy) that I have been growing over the last 3 years. She was my very first plant and I always do my best to take the very best care of her. I’m noticing some concerning issues and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Positives: she’s putting out new leaves (2 this season) and is growing taller and taller. Negatives: Her new leaves are crinkly? And I’m noticing some yellow spots on her leaves. She’s in a North/ West facing space and has a 8hour grow light. Any ideas?

More light and probably fertilizer if you’re not giving any. BOP are potassium loving but it’s good to give a balanced fertilizer & I’d give it as much light as you possibly can. Also humidity is important I keep mine around 60% and try not to get below 50 for my tropical plants.

I’ve had this happen to my BOP before with the malformed leaves but could never get to the bottom of it. However mine got better after I gave it more light and stuck to a water schedule it liked - which was every 9 days or so and mine is facing west!) But I agree, the more light you can give it, the better it should do. I’d either move it closer to the grow light/window - or get a 2nd grow light (maybe one you can stick into the soil and extend it as far up as you can). It Could also need some additional humidity (like stick a humidifier on your side table and have it pointing towards it!) Also what’s your watering schedule you have it on?

I’m watering every 14 days as per Planta’s recommendation- maybe I play around with it? Planta seems to think it might be an issue of overwatering? I don’t know if I think that’s right. It’s near a West facing window, that doesn’t get much light due to a nearby building and a North facing window. I had a grow light attached to an extension pole but it outgrew it, and now I’ve attached it to the curtain rod. It’s on for 8hrs. I’ll try increasing the humidity to see if that helps.

14 days considering the location seems like the perfect amount considering your conditions (i’ve always heard it’s better to underwater than overwater though). So maybe at the 14 day mark, check to see if it’s damp, if it’s even the slightest bit damp, I’d snooze it for a couple more days (how ever long it needs til it’s pretty dry). And honestly since the grow light you have is pretty high, I’d still think it could be beneficial to add a 2nd one even if it’s only reaches half way (maybe that will encourage the new leaves to grow stronger!). They can handle a lot of light so I wouldn’t worry about giving it too much light if that makes sense!)

That first photo looks similar to bacterial leaf streak, can be treated with a copper fungicide.

I’m looking up some photos online and you may be right about an infection. Maybe root rot? Some of its stems are showing some brown too. I might have to repot her. 🥲

Check the roots. If they smell or are mushy then cut all bad roots and repot. Also you said you water every 14 days. Never water on an exact schedule. While BOPs need water often always check the soil to be sure.
