Hello! My name is Cindy, I’m a bit newer to growing plants and my first is a mango tree. It’s only a week or so old, and it’s grown to about six or seven inches now. But it won’t grow upwards, all of its energy is going into one specific leaf which is now as long as the stem. Google tells me to trim it, but I don’t want to accidentally kill the plant. The picture I provided is from two days ago, that longer leaf is now as long as the stem and a dark green.

It looks like it needs to be pruned. Do you see any good healthy node points?

I’m so new to this I don’t even know what a healthy node would look like, but KJM advised I prune the leading leaf because it’s taken most of the growth and allow the others to take its place.

I think that’s some solid advice

Normally when I grow avocado trees I try to grow them to atleast 12 in and then trim it about half way at a node. There’s so awesome videos on YouTube about pruning and helping trees grow :) best of luck! Hope to see updates.

As my daughter would say, "follow the Google mother". I don't have any real experience with mango but I would just trim the large leaf and let it grow for a while before trimming the top. It looks like you need a little more height before you work on side branching. When you trim the leader of any plant it forces side growth and then you can train another branch upward to be the new leader.
