Hi! I recently purchased this philodendron from Trader Joe’s I think it’s a pink princess bc of the stem colors. When I first got it the variegated parts were brown, but the mostly white leaf was beautiful and it was putting out new growth quickly. The day after I bought it, one of the leaves formed this fluid filled bubble and I ended up cutting it off when I noticed it was growing. I then repotted it into well draining soil and a slightly bigger pot. A few days later and the variegated spots on the leaves are all turning brown now! It gets bright indirect light from both East and West facing windows, and I’m being careful to not overwater. Please help!

    Over watered let dry out, the damage was done probably at the store before you got it.

    I agree that you are probably dealing with some overwatering issues that started before you bought it. Some of those places literally water the plants every single day, so they’re drowning before you even buy them. Not your fault! Just a thought- and I could be wrong - but I did notice you say you repotted into a bigger pot which could be exacerbating the overwatering issue- depending on how much bigger the new planter was. With philodendrons, especially if they’re struggling, I try to pick a planter that’s only 1” bigger than the size of root ball. If it’s bigger than that, the roots are surrounded by too much wet soil that it can’t use quickly enough. Either way, I’d probably try to take a look at the roots and see what’s going on if I were in your shoes. I highly suspect it has some root rot going on with the way so many leaves are browning like that. Whenever I’m dealing with possible root rot, here’s what I do: -Take the plant out of the pot and gently remove as much of the old soil mix as I can. Soaking it in water, rinsing the roots off (be careful not to let the soil go down any drains in your sink- I recommend hosing outside or using a bucket), and using old paintbrushes all work really well. -Inspect the roots. Specifically, I look for any roots that are brown, crispy, mushy, and/or clearly rotting. Then, prune those roots with clean scissors. -After you’ve removed all the unhealthy roots, spray the remaining roots thoroughly with 3% hydrogen peroxide or dunk them briefly into it- just make sure the bottle says it’s diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide. This will kill off any remaining bacterial or fungal stuff left. -Repot into fresh soil. You may already know this, but be sure to use a very well-draining mix (ex: equal parts perlite potting soil, and orchid bark). And again, you want to use a planter that’s only 1” bigger than the size of the root ball you have left- which may mean you actually use a smaller planter, depending on how much was removed. -Wait to water for an hour to let the roots callous over (otherwise they’ll absorb too much water through the cut roots). Wait a couple of weeks to fertilize as well. Then, just do what you’re already doing- give it good light and be careful to not overwater. If it helps, I water mine when it’s 50% dry and I check the soil using the baking method with a chopstick or skewer before watering. It may look a little unhappy for a week or two if it has any transplant shock, which is normal, but the browning should stop. You can also trim the worst looking leaves with clean scissors to help it out energy into new ones. Hopefully that helps. I think it can still bounce back. Good luck!
