Help!!!!!! So the other day I noticed webbing on one of my plants… I pulled it aside and checked and found a spider mite of course and note** IT WAS FORSURE A SPIDER MITE… I used insecticidal soap and sprayed it down and washed it while keeping it quarantined. I have found Spider-Mite eggs on the leaves since however I don’t see anymore spider mites I think. Since then I have only found 1 small web so I sprayed again and when looking through my microscope and see these bugs but TO ME they look almost more like thrips…. Through the microscope, I can see these bugs (see pics below) but only ONE thing that looks like it could be a thrips egg. I see nothing else like it on the plant or other leaves… I assumed there would be more eggs if they are thrips? I looked at several leaves and only found this one. but I did found a bunch of spider mite eggs and since there were webs and I know what I first found was a spider mite but now what is the likely hood that I also have thrips? Idk if this image of the thrip egg is something else that just looks like an egg and I have spider mites OR if this egg is determining that I also have thrips… please give me your opinions!

The spider mite and the spider mite eggs are unmistakable so I know I have/had spider mites … but I’m not sure if these are young spider mites or thrips and that’s a thrip egg :(

Also, that tiny looking bean is fairly big… it’s almost the same size as the bugs.. not sure if that matters..

these are photos of thrips — spidermites are nearly invisible

I took this with a special plant microscope so it’s like x1000 zoom.

My two cents from Thrips experience …. Webbing is not indicative of thrips. Thrips are hard to see with the naked eye, I use a magnifying glass and its still can take a minute. The body shape of the pests in your image align with Thrips. But I’ve never seen any pest at this magnitude before 😂 so I don’t know what others would look like. Your 3rd photo (?) you can see some small silvery spots and on the right side you can see some small black dots? Those are absolutely signs of Thrips. They can fly so they spread very quickly. You want to isolate the plant and any plants within its vicinity, just assume they have them and treat them as well. They have a 21ish day life cycle, they plant their eggs in the leaves (which protects them from topical treatments), then the eggs drop down in the soil, develop, fly back up to the leaves and continue their life cycle. You need to treat both the leaves and the soil to ensure you’re addressing them at all stages. Treat 1x/5-7days for at least 3 treatments. Do your research on how you want to address them. My experience, don’t waste your time with gentle/homemade/etc.

What do you use on them?? My plant is in pon and I’m not sure if i should just toss the pon or treat it and keep using?? Also, this plant was in a small room with like 40 other plants…. Which are not showing signs of anytbing JUST YET. I did spray with insecticidal soap on all of them but to remove ALL of them from their potting mediums will be a nightmare… which I may have to live though but just thought I would ask your suggestions first

i know thrips lay eggs in soil so they might not have originated in this plant if it’s in pon — but you want to treat before they start flying for sure — keep up with the soap at least, treating every other day until they’re gone. you can try treating the soil/pon by addding peroxide when you water to kill the eggs/larvae

I’ve never had to repot a plant because of thrips. So I wouldn’t make that your first step, I’d make it your last resort. Try other things first. I say do some research because you might have access to certain systemic things that I might not depending on where you live (e.g. I can’t get systemic granules where I am). My treatment: - get an insecticide spray that specifically lists thrips, wear a mask/use outside, whatever you need to do, just get a strong one. Spray all the foliage/stems/branches/ every 5-7 days - diatomaceous earth - give the entire top of your soil a good layer and leave it on until the plant is cured (like no dirt at all showing, and again wear a mask when applying) - you don’t want to get this wet, so you’d need to switch to bottom watering. Thrips are the absolute worst 🤮, I wish you luck!

Isolate it from the other plants. Thrips spread very quickly.

I did but I don’t know if it’s too late :( I don’t see anything yet on the others but I know it’s best to just assume and treat them :(

Thrips are horrible I couldn’t get rid of them until I actually threw away the plant. It was sad but I did everything! Good luck!

If you google Plant Studio Pests there is a really good article on my local plant shops website about Thrip, including immersing the whole plant in soapy water, to get rid of the eggs
