Apparently I struggle with overwatering and just being nervous in general about my new plants’ moisture levels. Are watering globes a good investment?

    Always check the soil moisture before watering by sticking your finger or a long enough stick (I like to use kebob skewers) into the soil, at least the first couple inches should be dry before watering. I wouldn’t recommend a water globe.

    I like using a moisture monitor as others have suggested. Planta is making really educated guesses but I have overwatered a few using their schedules. Now I use my monitor and if it’s damp, I skip the prompt to water

      They have ones that kind of look like good egg/bad egg scale from Willy Wonka where they bounces back and forth until they land on moist/dry/soaked

      Are you wiping it with a towel or tissue prior to using it? I noticed mine wasn’t accurate if I wasn’t wiping it down before and in between uses.

    Hey friend, I’m a bit confused if you mean water meter or water globe but I’ll give my input on both 😬 I don’t like water globes inside because it’ll pretty much be empty over night and spill all over your floor so you might as well just pour the water directly in the soil. As for water meter, they are only accurate when the soil is touching the rod. If you use lots of chunky stuff and there’s not enough contact, it’ll misread. If you struggle with watering, my fail proof way of checking moisture is to just pick the plant up. If it is watered sufficiently, it should have quite a bit of weight. Familiarize yourself with that weight and just water when it feels significantly lighter. Most soil mixes now is made of peat moss and it’s SUPER light when it’s dry because it becomes hydrophobic. Start with a few plants at a time and just learn how heavy they should be after watering. It’ll never be a guess after that. 😉

    water globes can be good, but only for specific plants. they're good for semi-hydro, but other than that, there's extremely high risk of overwatering and inconsistent watering. one side of the pot may remain dry while the part that the globe is on remains consistently damp. this confuses your plant and can stunt growth. i highly discourage the use of globes

    Thank you to everyone for all the great info! I definitely won’t use globes and I’ll try the water meter again and wipe off every time. I’m determined to be a plant person and not a plant killer this time around!
