Onyx Plant

SOS!! I got this plant (Hoya Carnosa) from a reputable nursery and it looked fine. I don't have any bugs on any of my other plants, but when I was checking Navi (my Hoya C) they had these small orange bugs attached to a few of their woody stems. I am entirely new to Hoyas. This is my first one, I have largely owned Pothos and Philodendron. I also have never had bugs that were not fungas gnats or soil critters before and am not really sure what to do about these guys or even what they are. I moved my plant into a "quarentine" of sorts but I could really use some advice. I am on a very limited budget, as a college student, but have quite an extensive collection of random plant supplies built up over the last 5 years, so if you suggest a treatment I might have it or may be able to get it if it isn't local to you or super pricey. Thank you for any help. I really appreciate it. With everything going on in my classes at the moment the absolute last thing I can handle right now is an infestation in my 70+ plant collection. I included pictures of the pests, the worst of the branches, the plant, and it's normal home in the house. I am happy to provide any further info needed to figure this out.

    These are aphids. Take your pot to the sink and use your sprayer thing and kind of blast them off the stems then give them a treatment with a pesticide. Something like name or horticultural oil or Captain Jack's.

    Aphids can appear suddenly especially with a change in environment. The environment gets right for the hatching and you have an explosion of aphids.

      Oh nooo... okay so I don't have a sprayer thing on my sink, we just have a regular faucet, we don't have a bathtub, I would have to use the landscaping hose outside, do you think that would be okay, or would that be too hard on the plant??

    Orange aphids can come with the plant or come from the environment on clothing, pests and other sources. My Hoya Multiflora had an infestation 6 months after I bought it and after it was brought inside. Spider mites, mealybugs are common on indoor plants in the colder months. I knocked them off with a hard spray from the garden hose. Then, treated with insecticidal soap. They returned a month later. I used Raid ant spray insecticide on them the second time after another water spray. They seemed to work. But, I use this as a last resort because the plant is inside away from beneficial insects and reptiles. I will wash off as much of the insecticide before putting the Hoya outside in spring. 🪴🍀

      If i wanted to just try to use less chemicals do you think the water/alcohol/dish soap route might work? Or should I just go straight to the pesticides? I don't put my plants outside because no one cares for the outside plants and they usually have white flies or aphids. (I rent)

      I use one part alcohol three parts water and a bit of dish soap and its worked for spidermites and mealybugs. I've never used it on aphids but I don't see why it wouldn't work for them. It even kills brown recluse spiders and those take lots of raid to kill😳

    Horticultural oil, neem, and Captain Jack's are all organic treatments. It's always good to try and remove as many as possible with a firm spray of water first.
