I’d start with giving the roots a check. I know that might be difficult as they have pretty shallow root systems, but I’m guessing they’re either potted in too much soil and need something smaller and shallower in terms of a pot, so giving the roots a check for any signs of distress or rot is important. One way to do so would be to carefully remove all of the plant and its soil from the pot and place it into a container/bowl of water for 20 minutes, allowing the soil to soak so after a while you can gently swish the pearls around and out of the wet soil it was in without as much risk of breaking roots off. If you’re unsure if the roots look alright, feel free to attach a photo and I’d be happy to see if I can confirm if the roots look alright or not

Ok I will try that but my pearls are just falling off. Is this still a good way to do it

Yes, especially if they’re too delicate to try getting out of a bunch of soil without help of the water right now

If the roots look distressed or rotted, I would soak the pearls in a small cup of hydrogen peroxide for about 20 minutes. It’ll kill any lingering bacteria from the rot and provide oxygen to the roots to help it recover faster. Snip any rotted roots off, then you can add some Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder and sprinkle a liberal amount on the roots. I’d repot it into a much smaller pot, nothing more than 1-2 inches wider in diameter to the width of the pearls collective rootball. If you’ve got any really tiny nursery pots, that would be perfect for this rn. Another option, while a little unorthodox; would be a little plastic fruit container (think of the ones with the slits for strawberries and blueberries). If you’ve got one of those and not a shallow pot or saucer, or very tiny pot to repot it into, that could work as a temporary pot until you can find one. Just place a terra cotta saucer under it to soak any excess water up after watering it. Hope this helps.

      Would this pot work

It could if it’s small enough. About how wide is it in diameter? If it’s a little on the taller side, remove some of the soil to make it a little shallower in the pot for the pearls. Pearls can be finicky that way in that with their shallow root systems, they need either a very small pot or a very shallow one to prevent overwatering them or root rot.

I hope this works. If not I have a place nearby to get another one and start again. So rule of thumb with these. When do you repot from nurseries?

I repot asap when I can, but if it’s a plant that’s prone to shock from repotting, I wait at least 2 weeks to a month before repotting so it can adjust to the new environment. The biggest thing in terms of repotting a string of pearls is to repot it into a shallower or smaller pot if it came in something with a lot of excess soil it doesn’t need. If you find that’s the case with a new one, gently remove the top half of the plant that’s attached to the soil, gently remove the bottom half of excess soil it doesn’t need, and move it to a shallower or smaller pot. If you can repot it that way without having to disturb the roots as much, it’s much less likely of going through shock from the repotting process

The nursery I get them from have them in nursery pots. When do I repot to a larger pot
