Recently had an infestation of fungus gnats which I'm pretty certain is right. Tried the sticky things and watering with mosquito dunk water to kill eggs but decided to just do a repot. How do I make sure they won't come back ? Ill be taking out all the soil and dumping it away but a few are flying about the house and I dont want them to make their way to my plants and start all this over again. And is there any chance of them being in the plants themselves ? 1st issue with bugs since getting them about 2 years ago and I rlly just want them out of my home but I cant leave my plants outside with the temperatures rn.

what kind of potting soil do you use? well draining soil is a good way to keep them at bay. they usually aren’t quite as persistent in the colder months either

Had to do a re pot due to sinkage over the summer so it was whatever soil my mum owned and she exclusively cares for outdoor plants like courgettes and tomatoes so drainage isn't her priority. I've just ordered a multi purpose mix since I wasn't sure on what was needed though I think it markets itself as water retaining 💀 Any suggestions for a better 1 ?

I always use fox farm ocean forest as my base and add things like extra perlite, orchid bark, fine peat, and/or earthworm castings as necessary for various types of plants

This!!! Make a chunky soil mix as described. Gnats thrive in moist soil. Also yellow sticky traps and fungus gnat death drops.

The only thing that's really helped for me is systematic granules or drench. I tried neem and didn't help. Tried mosquito bits and it was better. But not great. I started using systemic bonide granules for the soil and larvaand a bunch of sticky traps and zero to catch adults. And been really well now. You can remove soil all totogether and switch to pon or leca. Or try a top dressing on your plants so the adults can't get at the soil.

+1 bonides. Also recommend beneficial nematodes from natures good guys. The nematodes eat fungus gnat larvae. Treat your entire collection at the same time. I add it to me fertilizer mix and apply with every watering. No more fungus gnats.

Yes to beneficial nematodes! But I am really wary of systemic granules, esp if you have kids or pets. They’re extremely toxic and I avoid treatments like that.

There are systemic that are kid and pet. Sierra natural science 209 uses a rosemary extract

MICROBE-LIFT BMC drops, 1 drop per gallon with every single watering. I had a bad infestation and this got rid of them, a game changer.
