This is Stevie my dracaena fragrans. My mother in law gave him to me on his death bed. I’m needing help on saving his life right now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would repot it if you haven’t yet. That pot looks like it’s wayy too big for what the plants roots probably are. Make sure that when you do repot it you use a soil that is chunkier so that it can really get the excess water out. I would also look for pests, this looks like a rot issue but it could also be an issue with bugs. when you do repot though, be sure to snip off any dead leaves and any roots that are brown and mushy or dry. and make sure the pot you put him in is about 1-2 inches bigger than his root system and don’t forget to give him some good food!

The entire stem looks rotted. Is there any part that is still firm.

The one to the left is a bit firmer than the one on the right.

It will be difficult for it to survive since the damage is at the core of the stems and root system. I fully agree with the above comments. You have to prevent the roots from sitting in excess water. I will add a comment that the top of the soil should be close to the rim of the pot. It allows air circulation to help dry out the soil.
