Hi all Does anyone else suffer with plants being distressed ( underwatered or overwatered) in winter despite following Plants guidance? I have two rubber plants, monkey mask, prayer plant and couple others I just can get right at the moment. Some have yellow bottom leaves but pushing new growth whilst others drying leaves eventually going yellow as well. I’ve had plants for 5 years now and seem to wobble in winter for some reason where I can’t get it right. I love my plants and just agonise over loosing any, just wonder if anyone else struggles in winter with plant care 😁

Yes and I have about 4 that are just stems right now so I’ll be starting over with them and only watering monthly. On the other hand about 60 of my plants have new leaves shooting out weekly still

Yes! Planta’s algorithm can only predict so much and there’s other variables in winter that can affect how fast your plants dry out, so I’ve noticed that some plants dry out way faster with the heat running and some plants drying out way slower because they’re not getting as much light this time of year. I always use a chopstick to check the soil moisture before watering to see if the plant has dried out enough before watering again. I’ve also learned to check on my more sensitive plants or the plants that I have near vents more often than Planta reminds me to in case it’s dried out early (but remember to make sure the soil is actually dry enough first).

That sounds about right! Plants affected by drying quicker are near radiator whereas overwatered ones are little further I’ll be following your suggestions going forward. Thanks so much 😊

Light also really affects them. You might see if grow lights help!

I also have winter issues every year. I do my best with the knowledge I have but still some plants are having issues. I have a syngonium dropping leaves and I can’t figure out why. And some succulents giving me some issues.

Thanks Phil! Do Syngonium leaves go crispy on tips first or yellow? One of mine started to shed leaves ( crispy edges first) when I checked soil and roots they were very dry. Hope you can get it sorted 😊

I’ve started using PlantDoc moisture meters and I love them! Comes white and when you put in soil that’s wet it becomes colorful. Then, as the soil dries out it turns back to white. I wait to water until it’s completely back to white. Hope that helps some!

I have two big winter issues. With things that overwinter outside, it's mostly inexperience, but I've struggled to insulate the pots and i am never sure when to water them since they might freeze the next day. With indoor plants, some of them need a winter dry season while some need very consistent watering, and i tend to accidentally back off watering on all of them
