I just got a new variegated Monstera plant, and the part of the leaf that is white was turning brown and yellow, and was dying off. So I assumed it was root rot, so I cut the part of the leaf off and I took the plant out of the pot. I found some nasty soil, and now I have it in water. Was that the right thing to do?

yes! this is a thai con and they love hydro & leca. just be very careful, as they are absolute divas when it comes to root rot. they're infamous for it. put in a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to prevent any more rot

helloo! its natural for the white parts of your thai con to turn brown, as they don’t hold chlorophyll like the bright green parts of your leaves. it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong, but it’s still a great thing to check the soil and make sure nothing was going on so i believe you did the right thing to switch for now :) i agree with the leca idea ive never tried it personally but ive seen a lot of beautiful thai cons in leca 🌱💚 you got this!!!

I’ve had good luck supplementing with silica. This helps prevent the white areas of highly variegated plants from going brown.
